The Eurovision rant thread

We pay a very large amount of money on the licence fee, yet year in and year they waste money on the Eurovision song contest.

Its the most political motivated show on TV, yet the BBC put this on each year, some years they even offer to cover it for a country that cannot afford it, and still don't get any votes.

Watching the show at the moment and the Hump has only ONE VOTE, yet Sweden is winning by 140 votes.

I would suggest the BBC give it up.

"I don't like it so it shouldn't be shown" is not a valid argument against the BBC; unless you want to come across as really, really selfish.

Thread title changed seeing as you seem to want to address Eurovision rather than the BBC in general. ;)

Personally, while I find the regional bloc voting irritating, it's obviously not enough of a problem to derail the results. Sweden was the favourite going into the competition and while I like the UK entry in itself, I just don't think it stood out against a very strong field this year, especially not being first on, which is always a difficult job.

Plus of course the UK is one of the most successful nations ever at eurovision

True, though our success was back in the days when it was essentially a western European competition. The dynamic has changed a lot - though iirc we managed a creditable 5th the year Lloyd-Webber wrote it for us.

If i understand the current hosts are closer to the middle east than europe.

I 100% say its about time we pulled out of this shower of s

Why we have to go through being a laughing stock is beyond me, i want my license fee i pay towards this garbage refunded.

Eurovision just seems so dated now. Does it still attract wide ratings? As for our poor record it's probably because we try creating something designed to win whereas everyone else seems to embrace the fun/silliness of it. Maybe because we're actually quite good at producing international acts we don't have the niche appeal or something radically different.

We came 2nd from bottom because that is how good we were and that is to be expected with our entrant unlike Sweden who deserved to win and eventually walked it.

But by far the best part was Graham Norton's acid comments.

Lets face it though poor hump his song was awfull....I think to get in with Europe we need something like Bucks fizz because most of the Euro songs all still seem a bit back dated I think something Euro sounding might just do it or at least get us in the top 10 lol

It's the Eurovision song contest, not the European song contest. The thing is run by the European Broadcasting Union, which is centred on, but not limited to the continent of Europe.

Do people actually watch this dross? I thought it was mostly aimed at bored housewives and children that need nationalism drilled into them?

Could someone, any of the nay or yay sayers, get a grip. It was rubbish from the outset.

More like Ireland ensuring they don't win, when they went through that phase of winning every year it nearly bankrupted the country. Spain's entrant actually said she'd been asked to put in a poor performance as the country couldn't afford the cost of a victory.

The only truly successful song to come out of the whole 40 years plus of the contest was Waterloo by Abba. It's still played somewhere in the world every day to this day.Who the hell really remembers the rest?;)
