Ofcom says 0800 should be free from any phone.

Ofcom announced today that it wants to see all 0800 calls to be free of charge, no matter whether the call is from a fixed line or mobile.

They are also proposing to clarify call charges on all 08, 09 & 118 numbers when a non BT line is being used.

I'd like BT's LoCall 0845 rate applied to all providers too... the same cost as a Local Call.

0845 hasn't been tied to the cost of a 'local call' on BT for a long time as far as I know

I can remember that it was called "Lo-Call" not Local.

Non-geographic numbers(0845&0870) are really geographic numbers for an unspecified area.

If you're a business that has a 0800 number, who bears the additional cost of a mobile call? Will the phone company be expected to absorb the extra costs?

I'm guessing OFCOM's point is that mobile costs have fallen enough so there isn't any extra cost for either the customer or provider over calling it from a landline

I'd be happy with 0800/0845 coming from any minutes in the inclusive tariff.

OFCOM really should have looked into the 0800 issue about 5 years ago. had they done some planning they could have tied it into the 03 system. ie anyone who pays for an 0800 number gets the equivalent 03 number as well. (ie 0800 123456 would also bee accessable via 0300 123456, 0808 123456 0308 123456 and 0500 (i think theres still some about) 0350 123456 at TRUE local rate (as will all 03's)) that way its the user that pays the extra connection cost without beeing fleeced as they are right now. Though i suspect its too late for that now :(
