World 'reputation' rankings: US universities in lead

Quote:

Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are top of a global league table of university reputation - in a top 100 dominated by US institutions.

Cambridge and Oxford make the top 10 - but other UK universities have slipped, while Asian institutions have risen.

Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education rankings, says this is "uncomfortable news" for the UK.

Remind me why we have to pay £9,000 a year to go universities like Cambridge and Oxford?

Have a look at what you have to pay for Harvard...

I am not suprised universities under funded need revamping Cambridge and Oxford survive due to its tradition reputation.

They pick field the hub such as electronics industry the unversity more geared to those students.

Here alot universities mixed bags too generalised there is universties who do have leading fields expertise but not enough out there.

Now the other thing is years to come the fees will get invested but We need revamping the structure of higher education.

Quote:

California, where universities have helped to drive digital industries, has three institutions in the top 10.
Knowledge hubs There has been growing economic and political importance attached to developing such "knowledge hubs", with the expectation that such advanced research bases can be the launchpads for hi-tech industries.
New York, wanting to compete with the Silicon Valley institutions in California and the research hubs in Boston, is deliberately trying to build its own science campus.

Yes thats America, the land of the unequal, where the rich have everything, here we need to scrap the fees and invest into universities!

You do realise that ten times as many people attend degree-awarding institutions in the USA than do in the UK - 20 million versus 2 million?

There's little to invest. Tuition fees were increased as teaching grants were slashed. Basically, the part of higher education that was publicly funded was taken away, and students are expected to foot the bill. There's no extra money...

Then again, the population of the US is 5 times that of the UK, which still makes them outscore us by 2:1. Then again again, what's a 'degree awarding institution'? Does 'college' count, when the topic is Universities?

No - in the first link, it shows there are also 10 million 18-24 year olds enrolling in Community or feeder colleges.

Anyhoo, my point was in rebuttal to Alan's non-fact based assertion that only the rich have everything, when in fact twice as many (per head of population) attend University.
