Encyclopedia Britannica ends publication after 244 years

Quote:

The Encyclopedia Britannica is to cease publication after 244 years of continuous print, and move online as the dominance of digital media intensifies.Since its launch in Edinburgh in 1768, a new version of the Britannica was available every two years, with the latest 32-volume collection costing £1,195.
Very sad .A good quality set of Britannica's is a beautiful thing to own

It was like having a filofax to some people. you used to be able to buy a set of them in easy monthly payments. and stick them on a shelf and say do you like my set of encyclopedias? :)

The problem has always been that science and information is always updating and changing so much so that in a short space of time a set can become inaccurate. After the five years of secondary schooling they become less useful and keep them long enough they become doorstops.

Mind I used to read the very old set of Cassells encyclopaedia that my grandparents had acquired. They were from the turn of the 19th/20th century and were so quaint. They were a snapshot on history.

Shouldn't the thread title have the word 'printed' somewhere in it?

I always thought these books were terrible, no structure, didn't have a clue what was going on just made no sense at all.

Possibly because they are out of date with incorrect info..The beauty of the internet that the online versions can be updated with very little effort.

a mod can edit the title if they want to specify "printed publication"
