Scottish Wildlife Trust builds £50,000 loo on Handa

Quote:

A public toilet is being built at a cost of £50,000 on a tiny isle that is uninhabited for six months of the year.
Quote:

The loo on Handa off Scotland's north west coast is being constructed in such a way that it can withstand gale-force winds and be eco-friendly.
Quote:

The foundations for the new toilet need to be two metres (7ft) deep to stop it from blowing into the Atlantic.
Quote:

With no running water on the island, people who use it will sprinkle sawdust after a visit. It will be cleared out every two years.

Surely some leaves and a tree would suffice

If you've been to Handa Island, you'll not be surprised at the conditions inside the remnants of the last remaining houses in the abandoned village. There's not a lot of cover.

Seriously though, after you've spent several hours walking round the island with a boat seemingly keeping you in sight from just offshore, then had to wait for the ferry to make another round trip because there's more than a boatful of people in front of you, before you can get to the toilet on the mainland, the main memory you come back with is "please can they put a toilet on Handa".

Still, it's a lovely place to visit.
