I picked up a Noontec N5 from ebay (no drive) for £46.. Takes a single SATA drive (3TB max) complete with Gigabit ethernet, USB (can be used like a caddy), built in media server, bit-torrent client, webdav and ftp server (no wifi but that is run through the router)

can you access files on any computer / mobile device? and play files...i might do the same if it works out cheaper... i was looking for 3tb.. or should i get one already set-up 2tb for 120£? im not really a computer wizz, but if it's easy to make my own and better, then i would rather do that |
Re: nAS harddrive with a usb option to transfer files
Yeah sorry it's full samba capable so anything attached to the network can access it, the webdav means you can access via a mobile, the media server is DNLA compatible.. I use mine for PC backups, sharing maps between memorymap, and connecting to a sony bluray for watching AVI files directly on the TV.
As for making one you could get an old computer and run a naked version of windows.. Or even grab a raspberry Pi once they are released and put the board in a disk caddy and run linux to share the drive. |
Re: nAS harddrive with a usb option to transfer files
how much did it cost for you to set it up?
and also if you want to connect it directly to your computer and transfer files can you do that? |
Re: nAS harddrive with a usb option to transfer files
I had a spare SATA2 drive so just plonked that into it.. The price for the box was what I mentioned in post #3.. and yes you can connect it to the computer directly via the USB
