If i chopped the terminator off the cable to my stb and connected it to the wall socket in the link, would it work?*

depends on whats on the other side

Yes techinically it will work but..., they cause snr issues, also there would be no Isolator

all there is inside Virgin box on the inside of my house is a modulator splitting the single cable input to a TV cable and one for FM. There is nothing that appears to isolate it from the grey box on the wall outside. Im a tad confused

Yep, you've got one of the old ones, which is a combined TV/FM diplexer & isolator.
