Can't connect to D-Link 615 (received new off VM)

Got this in the post yesterday from VM and can't connect to it at all.

Started off today following the initial setup in Peter's sticky with regards setting up. But, when I hold in the reset button for 30 seconds, one of two things happens. A: the power light starts to blink orange and continues to do so, or B: all the lights go off and nothing happens. In both cases I need to power it down and back on again to get any green lights on.

If it is powered on and off then all the lights come on green (power, network cable and wireless) and although my computer can see it as an unsecured connection, it simply won't connect.

I've tried wired as well, but it just sits there and I can't get a connection.

not sure what else to try as I followed (the incredibly easy) setup instructions to the letter but I just can't get a connection - any ideas? Thanks

Sounds like a duff unit, ring up and they will replace it.

Yeah reckon you are right. Just had my first taste of a new system for dealing with customers? Go through all the button presses, prompts etc only to be told they are busy and then they hang up. Amazing.

Not the place for a rant, but I'm not psychic, I don't like the idea of keep spending money on expensive phone calls in the hope I manage to get through or disconnected. They go from bad to worse :/

The was a fault in the Birmingham area so the may be a bit of a queue if still ongoing, try tomorrow just after 8am.

That's what it's supposed to do, you're putting it in firmware recovery mode.

Re: Can't connect to D-Link 615 (received new off VM)

The thing was, it would stay flashing orange and nothing else would happen (even after leaving it for 20 mins)

Received a new one this morning and it worked correctly - orange light starts to flash but releasing the reset button had it restart and all green lights come on. That plus I could actually connect to it of course.

One slightly confusing things, I had read most places that 192.168.1.1 accesses the config screen, but it was actually 192.168.0.1 that accesses the setup screens.

From his description it gets halfway and just freezes and does not go online, fairly rare but does happen at least his replacement works as it should.

I have only had I think 2 fail on calls into the centre like yours, and the 192.168.0.1 is correct as I use it almost every day in work.

That's the point. Firmware recovery mode waits until you manually upload new firmware to it. If you don't, well it keeps waiting.

It'd depend on the firmware - the default Netgear would be .0.1, but the very popular dd-wrt and others default to 1.1. Maybe that's where he saw it mentioned?

Nevertheless I've seen this kind of behaviour quite often - I've bought a few off ebay that have been described as thus, quick 2-minute firmware recovery gets it working again and nets me a bargain. Obviously you wouldn't expect your average customer to have to do that with a new warrantied unit, but gladly I'm not into being your average customer.

Also depending on the revision it's *supposed* to go into firmware recovery mode if you hold the reset button for ~6 seconds, but only during power on - some of them do it even after poweron for 30 seconds.

I see in your community thread that our new 2nd line has posted incorrect advice about getting a replacement router, that fills me with confidence for when our site closes.:D

I know what you mean but all our D Links use 192.168.0.1 and if you checked their own site all D links use that ip, which I found strange considering as you say Netgear use the same ip, the main thing is though is his new router worked and he has a spare power pack.

Re: Can't connect to D-Link 615 (received new off VM)

Well obviously I'm happy with the replacement as it is working fine - apart from signal range which is very poor compared to the Netgear.

But I'm curious. Gasdfdsaq says one that orange light is flashing constantly (the replacement doesn't do that, you hold down the reset button and as soon as you let go it restarts) you put new firmware on. But with the orange light flashing on is own, I couldn't even see the router wired or wireless.

Part of the problem was of course, that I couldn't connect even with the green lights all on. I could see it, but I couldn't connect to it.

What's the reasoning behind having to do the full reset anyway?

edit: My Netgear WNR2000 was 192.168.1.1 by the way.

In normal operation the are no orange light except when initialising the should be no need to do the pinhole reset on a new router but if you did it is of little consequence, normally the DIR615's have a good range you could improve it cheaply with a couple of these for under £3.20 in total Click ME

While it won't resolve genuinely faulty hardware sometimes a reset back to factory setting can resolve issues with the firmware itself.

The Dir615 had 3 reset stages
1. Short press and release resets router.
2. Hold for longer about 10seconds and it goes to Factory settings.
3. Hold even longer. about 20 seconds it goes to emergency room mode.

The last mode is for when the router has been "bricked" - for example when a firmware update goes bad. In this mode wifi and dhcp are disabled so you have to connect via ethernet and manually set the ethernet connection to an ip in the routers range to access the router and upload a firmware file.

If you've accidentally put it in ER mode a quick reset normally knocks it back into normal mode

Re: Can't connect to D-Link 615 (received new off VM)

To be honest I wasn't going to do the reset on the router (I didn't have to on the Netgear or the Belkin before that.

But the guide on these forums has this in this instructions The first thing you need to do is power down the modem and then you need to do a pinhole reset of the router, if you look on the back of the router the is a grey reset hole, you take a pen and press it into the router while powered on for 30 seconds..

That was more the basis for me asking why it was needed before using the router. I assumed it would be ready to go out of the box?

I posted the instructions in the main for people who already have the router and therefore the reset is usually essential but resetting it has no detrimental effect on the device, I probably should add that to any future post.
