Rabies and other nasties

The UK's animal quarantine laws are to be relaxed from the start of January.

The current laws governing the movement of pets will be brought into line with European legislation.

Currently, any dog, cat or ferret entering the UK must be vaccinated against and blood tested for the disease before being quarantined for six months.

But from January, pets from the EU and listed non-EU countries such as the US and Australia will no longer need a blood test and will only have to wait 21 days before they travel.

Pets from unlisted non-EU countries such as India, Brazil and South Africa will be able to enter the UK if they meet certain strict criteria to ensure they are protected against rabies, including a blood test and a three-month wait before they enter the UK.

Current rules which require animals to be treated for ticks and tapeworm will also be relaxed.

Defra said that bringing the UK's Pet Travel Scheme into line with the rest of the European Union had the potential to save pet owners about £7m in fees.

All it will take is one rabid pet to get out into the wild in the UK and then what?

Anyone else remember the TV show called "The Mad Death"?

We have something they don't have... a shoreline that keeps infected wild animals out.

And legislation to keep them out at our borders.

But now our EU masters have spoken.

Hmmm.. rabid foxes and badgers might well fight back...... ditto weasels, stoats, pinemartins, and large numbers of feral cats and dogs.

Our neighbour heard about this and said it sounded like a great idea designed to get foxhunting legalised again.

"But what about bat hunting?" I asked.

The is one epic fail with the 21-day rule, it takes at least 30 days for rabies to start to show.

you would have thought that the EU masterbrains would have bought other countries up to our standard not lower ours to theirs.I wonder if Cameron will have the balls to say no to this

I dare say the Eurocrats were worried that we may be feeling left out.....

Then again, maybe they're just thinking we'll all be more likely to vote for more of their madness them if we're all rabid....:D
