Do you want the BBC to have a third HD channel ?

Now that Channel 5 HD will not be on Freeview in April 2012. Ofcom have said the spare capacity will be handed back to the BBC. The BBC now have the option to launch another BBC HD channel on freeview. Remember All BBC HD channels have to be on all TV platforms that support HD in the UK.

Do you want the BBC to have a third HD channel ?

Please specify other below.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Beeb just added a HD simulcast of BBC News 24

I don't care.I just wish every channel would stop showing programmes that are NOT HD on their HD channels.

Yes. I also want a Ferrari, a private island and a luxury yacht to sail around it. Can we have a poll for that too?

Thanks for putting the " All of them" option but can someone tell me why the poll now has a option called " Some other equally pointless option " ?

I'll leave you to guess.

Why did you change the poll option to suit your personal view ?

I do not think that is fair.

Bit of a biased poll, had to select 'Some other equally pointless option'.

I'm happy with the two they have, BBC HD shows all the HD from their other channels that isn't on BBC 1

I'm not sure what benefits having CBBC in HD would be

Anyone who wants to take the poll seriously can click one of the two options you consider to be serious.

Anyone who thinks this is just another pointless fantasy daydream over something that has absolutely zero chance of happening any time in the near future can now express that view in the poll.

BBC HD is to get replaced by BBC Two HD and for BBC HD to close. The BBC now have the option to keep BBC HD.

That option was always open to them. The BBC was broadcasting HD by satellite and cable long before any capacity became available on Freeview. The limitations of Freeview HD has never been the issue and never will be. If the BBC wanted, and had the resources, to broadcast a third, fourth, fifth or a zillionth channel in HD there was never anything stopping them.

Unfortunately, there is something stopping them. It's called money, or rather, the lack of it. The whole reason they are dropping BBC HD in favour of BBC2HD is because it is cheaper to run a full simulcast than it is to run an entirely separate channel.

If you read around the subject you claim to be so interested in, rather than wasting your time daydreaming, fantasising and starting multiple pointless polls about it, you might have understood this. The information was, after all, published a good few weeks ago by the BBC. It received lots of national press coverage and was discussed at length on this forum.

Well what i have thought was that All BBC HD channels have to be on all TV platforms that support HD in the UK. So i would say freeview has been stopping them.

The BBC cannot afford a third HD channel, even if the bandwidth for a one on DTT is served up to them on a plate.

Simple as.

You thought wrong.

BBC HD was running for 2 years as a fully-functional TV channel before beginning to roll out on Freeview. In fact Freeview HD is still not available to the whole UK.

Freeview does not have sufficient bandwidth for all the BBC's channels to broadcast in HD, which must be the long term aim, given that there will come a point when all new BBC content is originated in HD. Under current arrangements it's difficult to see where the bandwidth is ever going to come from.
