Wirless router required for virgin broadband
 

Hi Guys,

I need some help. I recently had my 100mb installed (yesterday and its superfast), but I need to invest in an excellent wireless router which will work with all our home devices i.e. ipods, printers.

Is there one someone can recommend?

I've seen the following router but I don't think this will only work with N devices and not the older ones ... i.e. b and g.

What was wrong with the Virgin router? Mine works with all my devices with no issues. I even stream stuff to my PS3.

One good approach is not to buy a replacement router, but an add-on router to use as a wireless access point. That way you gan get dual band at a cheap price without any switching going on in the router. It also means you can get the ideal guard interval for your kit as well which is useful for most battery powered 802.11n kit that will only use one spatial stream, giving you a speed boost.

I can run 300Meg on 5GHz through my Shub and 72Meg through my Netgear WNR1000v3 on 2.4GHz which is the max that can be had on a single spatial stream on a 20MHz channel. Using a 40Mhz channel on 2.4GHz mode is very rude if you have neighbours, but the WNR1000v3 can do 150Meg on 40MHz channel for occasional use or if you live on a farm. You can't get faster on a single spatial stream (what most battery powered 802.11n equipment will limit you to) so a 150Meg router on 2.4GHz mode is the perfect pal for a 300Meg router on 5GHz mode. Run the same battery powered kit on a dual spatial stream router (300Meg routers) and you'll end up getting only 65Meg on a 20MHz channel or 135Meg on a 40MHz channel as the guard interval won't match up well.

What's more, the WNR1000v3 is a dead cheap router easily available on the high street and being Netgear matches the Shub in looks and user interface. A sweet combo.
