Michelle Bachmann - gays can marry, but only the opposite sex....

And this woman wants to be President - (deity of choice/or none) help us all.

Des Moines Caucuses
Quote:

JANE SCHMIDT: Then, why can’t same-sex couples get married?

BACHMANN: They can get married, but they abide by the same law as everyone else. They can marry a man if they’re a woman. Or they can marry a woman if they’re a man.

JANE SCHMIDT: Why can’t a man marry a man?

BACHMANN: Because that’s not the law of the land
This, from a woman who is trying to overturn Roe vs Roe (which is the law of the land).

So, according to Bachmann’s "unusual" logic, gay people have the same right to marry as straight people, they just have to be not gay.

There was a time when the laws of the land didn’t allow women to vote, own property, have a job, or run for political office.

imho, LGBT people aren’t asking for special rights, they’re asking for the same rights as everyone else.

She wants to be President, but doesn't think something should be allowed because it's the law of the land. Isn't part of the job of President changing the law of the land? If she's not going to be doing that, what is she going to be doing?

<pedant>
The President is the head of the executive branch, not the legislative branch. The president's job is to govern the country, not change laws.
</pedant>

That said, certain things the president will want to do will involve changing laws, and so the president may also put bills to the legislature (Congress and the Senate) just as our Government puts bills to Parliament. Nevertheless, it's a misconception that any Government's primary purpose is to change laws. It really isn't all, or even most, of what a Government does.

Strictly speaking as far as some people are concerened and depending on their definition of marriage she may be right .Some people feel that a couple cannot be married untill it's been consumated which quite clearly same sex couples cannot do ,other people feel that it is against gods will for same sex couples to marry .Federal law in America defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman so in that respect she is definately correct .Those few states that do allow same same sex marriage are only at state level and not recognized by federal law so again in that respect she is correct
It is a bit antiquated compared to Europe but it is their law untill it is changed

I understand what you are saying, marty, but when she states something can't be done "Because that’s not the law of the land " for one thing, and on the other hand is actively trying to change the law of the land regarding "Roe vs Roe", it seems she is choosing which laws of the land she supports......

what's roe vs roe Hugh ?i have googled but not come up with anything

I'm not saying she is right by the way ,i personally think she is using technicalities in law to justify her position on same sex marriage which appears to be antiquated as with most of America

Sorry - Roe vs Wade

The legal case/ruling that made abortion legal in the USA.

well she's definately anti choice and pro life .Shame she didn't just tell the pupils what she believed instead of using the law to justify her disagreement with same sex marriage just because she is a presidential candidate and doesn't want to rock the boat with too much controversy

Back in 2003 she wasn't so cautious

Quote:

On November 20, 2003, Bachmann and Representative Mary Liz Holberg proposed a constitutional amendment that would bar the state from legally recognizing same-sex marriage.[62] In 2004, Bachmann and a coalition of religious leaders announced plans for a "Minnesota for Marriage" rally.[63] Bachmann’s effort to place a marriage amendment on a referendum ballot in 2004 ultimately failed. She resurrected her proposal in March 2005[64] but it stalled indefinitely in a senate committee that April.[65]

Bachmann supports a U.S. constitutional amendment banning all abortion. She has also proposed a ban on some forms of birth control, such as Plan B, to which she has incorrectly referred as "the morning-after abortion pill." She has criticized one of her opponents, Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX), for instituting large-scale HPV vaccinations.

Not really, as that would play into her hands, outraging "middle America" with their (in their eyes) freakish/outlandish/immoral/uppity ways....

---------- Post added at 22:11 ---------- Previous post was at 22:10 ----------

And another one.....

She's obviously in good company in the Republican nomination race, as Rick Perry comes out with a cracker....
Quote:

there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.”
A) why shouldn't gays serve openly in the military
B) you would have thought he would have known that it is the US Constitution which doesn't allow teacher-led prayer in public schools (the First Amendment, which Thomas Jefferson stated erected "a wall of separation" between the church and the state)

you know something ,for a country that "polices" the world in the name of democracy and freedom and regularly goes to war to defend such virtues there are some pretty backward people in that country
