Virgin media wifi issue

Hello,

Before going on vacation for 2 weeks I unplugged my netgear router from the mains. On my return, I can't connect, or even see the router when I search for wifi networks. I can connect to the internet through it using a network cable, just not wifi.

I have connected to the router administration page and run the test, it all seems to be working fine. My wifi SSID and password are still in there. I've also reset the router and set it up again. I've tried to search for it using other devices without success.

Is there something quite obviously wrong or has it just packed up and I need to buy a new one?

Thanks for any help

Raj

Have you actually tried turning it off and on again?

Ah, just re-read your post, I see you have, so ignore my question. I should try turning my brain off and on again, before posting, sometimes.

I actually had a very similar issue recently, my laptop stopped being able to see my own wifi. I downloaded fresh drivers from broadcom, which fixed it for me.

Is the router broadcasting its SSID? It might need to do so for the 1st connection.

Hi, no it's not broadcasting its ssid. So frustrating!

call 150 > option 2 > then 3 > then 2 and ask for a new modem/router. send your old one back, not sure whether they recall VM Hubs but they did want my old SH back. they put a prepaid sticker in with the package so you can send your faulty one back within the same box via Royal Mail.

Routers not broadcasting a SSID doesn't always mean a fault. Some people configure them that way, as an additional security hurdle for wardrivers, on the mistaken belief that if the ssid isn't broadcast, then they need to know what it actually is. This is a fail-belief, there are ways to find out the ssid quite trivially, but anyway...

If the router isn't broadcasting its ssid, then you will need to find the "connect to a hidden network" option. Its location seems to vary dependng on what wifi drivers you have. On Windows' own configuration tool, its right at the very bottom of the ssid list.

It will then prompt you for the ssid, and try to connect to it, even if the ssid is not being broadcast.

Can't you set it to broadcast SSID in the config?

Hmmm, i'll give that a go and report back. I've tried getting laptop/phone to connect assuming ssid is not being broadcast. I thought i'd try that, but no joy at all. As you have suggested i'll try to make it broadcast ssid. Standby for results......
