Well BT have finally annouced a 100Mbit product to compete with VM's 100Mbit product.. but with a higher upload speed of 15Mbit.

Question is now... as per usual, VM will undoubtedly respond and go 1 better than BT just to get one over on them.

So.. what does everyone believe will be the next upgrade?

150Mbit? or 200Mbit that was on show a while back at the ideal home show.

Wouldnt expect VM to go over 200Mbit for the time being.. lol but the question is,

Whats next VM?

I personally can't see the need for connection speeds greater than 50mbit at the moment. Even if a person was downloading HD video 50mbit would be more than enough. I doubt there is much MASS demand for 100mbit nevermind 150mbit or 200mbit at the moment. Of course there will be a small percentage of people that will want the fastest speeds possible.

My bet is on 200 down 20 up in other words just double the top speed.

With so few homes covered until more homes are covered I doubt VM would bother to even respond surely?

Knowing Virgin Media, they'll go to 200/20 once it has wider coverage. I'm sure I've seen BT's rollout plans previously, and it seems like they'll have pretty wide coverage relatively soon.

If Virgin Media are to offer 200/20 however, I'd expect them to lock more channels on DOCSIS 3, as with 4 there's only around 220Mbps / 20Mbps bandwidth or so, which would of course be used by a single customer, which isn't overly good.

FTTH roll out is pretty limited even up to 2015.

For VM to truly compete surely they'd have to have some sort of fibre to the home service too? Then they could increase bandwidth dramatically. They could have these limited roll outs then marketing could still claim they're the fastest.

I'd love to see FTTH from Virgin Media, but to be honest I can't really see it happening.

Keep in mind that this is 1.5Gbps broadband being provided over coax.

For the time being, yes. Fibre likely has more of an upgrade path though I'd imagine, plus it's possible to provide a 1:1 ratio on upload/download speeds.

HyperOptic is providing 1Gbps up and down for 50 pounds per month, and plans on offering 10Gbps in the future.

As has been mentioned previously despite whether or not it is needed the broadband speed race is nothing
More than a mine is faster than yours competition now between vm and bt so regardless of what percentage the ftth market from bt is, vm will just look at it and as existing and an expanding market from bt.. Therefore they will respond the question is with what.. Being they showcased 200 at the ideal home show a awhile back it's likely to be that just to get one over on bt

200/20 isnt possible until further investment is made as the docsis2 upstreams can only do about 18meg throughput and not to mention its a disaster waiting to happen ;)

I agree tho VM will be very likely to want to win on the marketing. The problem is FTTH is a much superior tech so BT can win this one easily, docsis3 cant come close.

The reality is VM is still in the better situation currently as FTTH coverage is almost zero. Its hardly anywhere, but long term the future is brighter for BT.

Just looking on Wiki and it looks like docsis3 can got up to 30(27)Mb

Unless I don't understand it.
But could they not do bond 2 upstream channels, but I presume this would mean network upgrades.

QAM64 will do that, VM dont currently use QAM64 tho. From what I have read and heard we will see channel bonding before QAM64. However the bonding may be just merging existing channels with no actual increase of capacity per modem.

Selling 20mbit upstream on those channels would still be messy and probably only work well in undersold areas.

VM should be looking to do FTTH instead of just lying about providing "fibre optic broadband". Still, I suppose they think they are allowed one big fib because BT are allowed to sell you "up to" 24Mb. Guess what, I have "up to" £1,000,000 in my pocket and shall be paying you "up to" £35 for internet service, sounds good?

Fujitsu should lay FTTH everywhere as they offered to. BT and VM have failed to provide fast broadband in a timely manner. I remember using 100/100 FTTH in Japan back in 2004 and it cost about £20/month. I am not optimistic that we will see 100/100 by 2014 in time to be only a decade behind. Plus we still have unreasonable throttling and download limited on "unlimited" products.

BT's 100Mb service will no doubt be pathetic as it will be plagued by their standard traffic retarding and interference, combined with their legendary lack of interest in diagnosing and fixing faults.

imo BT have the better system, it wont be cloged up with all the users... i may actually move over.. :)
