New Business Services - Connect to Draytek

Dear all

I'm eagerly awaiting the install of the new 50MB Business Service from VM and want to connect to WAN2 of our Draytek 2820n.

I've been advised by VM that the Super Hub to be provided with Business Services will not have a modem only mode and that I will need to assign a static IP to the Draytek and this in turn means that I need to buy a pack of 5 ips, even though I only need one.

Another option which would save the addtional £10 per month perhaps is to set up a dynamic dns account and I've noticed that the Draytek has a config page just for this and allows a "WAN2 only" setting.

Has anyone any experience of using VM services with dynamic dns on WAN2 ?

Thanks

DT

I am waiting to upgrade from the 10 Mb/s service with fixed IP to the 50 Mb/s one and need to acheive the same setup as you - in my case a Cisco router behind the Superhub but with a fixed publicly routable address on the WAN port of the Cisco.

I was told that modem mode might not be there from the start but still will be offered, as it's the modem par tof the device that forms the L2TP tunnel not the router, meaning the router part can still be disabled and not affect the fixed IP setup.

Like you I will need to have the 5 IP option when I need only one given that modem mode isn't available yet.

I'd be vey interested to hear what firmware version you get on the Superhub. I know it's a different firmware branch to the consumer version, but hope in some ways it's R30 derived.

I assume you are having a new install as opposed to an upgrade?

Unless you trun off the VM connection for a lengthy period of time the IPs issued dynamically are very sticky. They don't change much. You may find that the dynamically allocated IPs are adequate.

I'm surprised that on business they are not offering a modem option as an alternative to the superhub. Even small businesses often have their own network infrastructure that means the superhub would be uncecessary.

Re: New Business Services - Connect to Draytek

We use a vigor 3200 series (4 WAN ports), with two 20mb virgin products and one bethere bonded product, the wans connected to the virgin modems get their ip by dhcp.

I can confirm the dynamic dns is great on the vigors, as soon as it changes it will update our dyndns providor (ZoneEdit), it works great unless like yesterday we reset our virgin modems they got new IP's and ZoneEdit was down (major outage) hence our DNS was wrong all day for our webmail and VPN services.

The reason I have posted is that we are being upgraded to two 50mb's on MOnday, now im worried that I have to use a buggy R30 with no modem mode, we have asked for 5 ip's on each conection so I hope there are no NAT/firewall issues using the superhub as a router and not as a modem only..

Ill let you know how it goes if you like.

Dear all

Thanks for the interest and comments to my post and I would be in knowing how others get on.

The installers came today but concluded that the installation was not going to be as straightforward as they thought owing to our building location and layout. They have to submit a report to VM for approval.

It looks like I may not be "live" now for 2 to 4 weeks but will post results as and when.

Doh!

/SuperHub 20mb to 50mb Upgrade (Business)

:cool:OK, as promised here is my findings on our upgrade which happened today.

We had 2 x 20mb dynamic IP's Connected to our Vigor 3200 Router (4 WAN Aggregator)

Engineers came last week but were missing the PPP ussername passwords.

We had ordered 2 x50mb installs (we are a school) and 5 static IP's on each.

The firmware on each superhub is:

Hardware Version 2.00
Software Version V5.5.2R04-BU

If you have 5 public IP's it is configuered as follows:

First address = network
Second Address = LAN on superhub
5 useable (to be setup on your PC/Router)
Last one is broadcast

The engineers dont have the IP's until install day and phone up for them and a PPP username which is then entered onto the router, this aparently is so that you can only use these IP's even if someone clones your MAC address.

It appears the public IP's are setup by adding another subnet on the LAN interface on the superhub, (a gateway IP and a subnet) make sure if you have 5 IP option the subnet mask is a /29 ie: 255.255.255.248

the superhub has DHCP turned off but can still be reached on it's 192.168.0.1 address (infact the web admin will only serve up on this address, not any of the public ones), I had to add a static route on my vigor

I see no modem mode, although on the services section most items seem to be set to PASS through.

A speedtest at the time of install 2:00pm GMT reported speeds of 20mb-30-mb, I have just done a test just now and got 50mb down and 5mb up. from each router.

They did not take the equipment with them, and I have contacted my account manager to recover the equipment.

By all accounts I was the 3rd customer who the engineers had upgraded, and they struggled to grasp IP's and subnetting as they are telco engineers NOT network engineers.

Hope this helps those who wanted to know how it goes.

Since the feedback is related to your original post on what might happen it is appropriate that it should be in this thread, rather than a new one.

Threads merged.
