Using a contract phone in Europe

Before I went away last month, I rang VM to confirm that my phone was set for international roaming and was told that it was. They also told me to use a text number to buy Internet time as it was cheaper than the roaming cost. When I arived in Portugal which was my first port of call, I switched my phone on and got nothing! Zilch, just a red cross showing no service. When I tried to log on to a network I was told "Your SIM card is not compatible with this network" and this happend in Spain, Italy and France So my phone was totally useless. My wife who has a PAYG VM phone got a signal in every country. So I found an internet cafe and emailed VM, and when I got home, they had rung my home number and left a message saying they would call again, which they haven't, so I sent another email today. I am absolutely livid about this. It's just as well my wife had her phone, otherwise I would have had real problems.
