Daily aspirin 'blocks bowel cancer'

A daily dose of aspirin should be given to people at high risk of bowel cancer, say scientists.

Two pills a day for two years reduced the incidence of bowel cancer by 63% in a group of 861 at-risk patients, a study reported in The Lancet said.

As with all possible medications there are great benefits but there are also side efects from many of these medications so every patient has be judged on whether the benefits outweigh the negatives.

i take over 20 pills a day and the side affects are major on some of them.

The Codine gives me really bad wind!

Aspirin is looking like one of those drugs the benefits of which far outweigh the potential side effects. I believe cuyrrent advice is that anyone at risk of heart attack ought to carry them routinely unless they have been advised otherwise.

Unfortunately I suffer from reflux and severe heartburn from time to time.Aspirin is therefore something I avoid.

Its always strange that find that scientist come up with all these ideas, l was told by a good friend that if you drank cranberry juice, helps with urine infections and Tomato juice helps with cholesterol.

I know that Aspirins are good for the heart, but l think that the more tablets you take the more addicted you get, sadly l don't like taking drugs unless l have to, I will see what my gp say's before any scientist.

Aspirin is not addictive Arthur, cranberry juice does indeed help with urine infections, cooked tomatoes are good for cholesterol, the cooking releases lycopene.

See what your GP says if you want, you do know that they take their guidance from the scientists though?

GP = generalist, knows a little about a lot of areas
Scientist = Specialist, knows a lot about a specific area

I know who I'd trust more.

Having said that, the GP will know your personal history, so can factor that into any medical discussion re the aspirin/bowel cancer.

Anyway, Arthur, because you have an aviary at your house, you would have to securely store the aspirin, otherwise the parrots eat 'em all......:D

Yes l have the same problem so Aspirin is something that the doctors have avoided giving to me for 11 years.

As l am getting old, l try my best to use the best available drug l can for any ailment l have, but try not to mix them.

Ache bones, trap nerve etc, my company doctor said l had high cholesterol and needed a certain drug - but you can get hooked on it. That's why l drink tomato juice.

Arthur, statins are not addictive.

Exactly because l am on them and l get no side effects from the Simvastatin tablet that l take.

Asprins aren't good for the heart. They thin the blood down, and help to increase blood flow through narrow arteries.

I presume it's something to do with the fact that it thins your blood that also helps with bowel cancer.

I wish I had known this years ago, as my dad died of bowel cancer, and a friend is recovering.

The only risk from Aspirin is that a small amount of people can develop bleeding in the stomach from taking Aspirin
