Mandatory life sentences plan for wider range of crimes

The government has set out plans for mandatory life sentences for crimes other than murder.
Under a "two strikes" approach anyone convicted of a second serious sexual or violent crime in England and Wales would get an automatic life sentence.
Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said the plan was for "ultra serious criminals", and added: "It is a big step and I don't take it lightly".
Wow..that's pretty hard core Ken..

But...

Currently, only those convicted of murder face a mandatory life term. Mr Clarke said he wanted to bring in "more certain sentences" because indeterminate sentences had "failed".
"We've got 6,000 people languishing in prison, 3,000 of whom have gone beyond the tariff set by the judge, and we haven't the faintest idea when, if ever, they are going to get out," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
'Pretty murderous' "It's a gross injustice, a bit of a stain on our system."
And this will help?

Well the proofs in the pudding so we shall see whether these plans get turned into reality.

I certainly hope they will be discussed thoroughly before being put into practice..

Given Judges have ignored the Three Strikes Policy how likely is it they will ignore this too.

well they can't have it both ways .I seem to remember that some criminals cried foul when they where given indeterminate sentances ,saying that it was against their huan rights not to know when they can be released ,this idea is meant to replace that so the criminals know when they could possibly be released

Sounds great idea in principle tough sentencing and second would mean life on these accounts.

However there worry too one is prison population costs go through roof thats not worry for me but government bound to be first to complain.

Second more serious note could be someone on second strike. May look at the situation think he going away for life might not hesitate to commit murder in the next time.

Thats very big worry it might not happen all the time but if one person murdered through legislation surely it fails.

Fear we might do the oposite instead put fear in them to commit again it takes the shackles off to speak. We probably dealing with complex minds here yes some may end up sadly taking a life.

Personally its difficult one for me not black and white and think it should be done case by case not general sweep rule.

Surely if animal who very bad commits first horrid frenzy attack why wait he should be locked up anyway. If the attack was very viscious then he should be put away forever before he kills on the FIRST TIME.

Dont leave another victim to suffer in his hands. Some will take this rule with carefree atitude. If the victim was known maybe friend family who he hates then likely that victim will likely die on that second strike.

Thats the fear got they may only continued to beat them but now it could put more dangerious situation.

Equally robbers wont stop they will still do it if they desperate what happens if he feels next victim could put him in prison for life.

Look at USA there tough policy on this is there country free of violent crime nope they wont care and there prisons nowhere near like ours.
