Slow speeds since Tivo install
Since having Tivo installed at peak times i've noticed that my 20MB broadband is dipping to 2MB at times, it might be a coincidence but has anyone else noticed this?

Can you elaborate on what the upstream is also doing? |
Re: Slow speeds since Tivo install
TiVo isn't provisioned on separate anything from residential broadband services nor does it have any dedicated bandwidth, it's a standard best effort configuration and contends with whatever else is on the channels as normal :)
Unsure why speeds would dip at peak, sounds like a coincidence especially given the TiVo will be on the DOCSIS 1.1 network while the 20Mb will almost certainly be served via the overlay DOCSIS 3 network. |

Joshua Danovitz, VP & General Manager, International, TiVo Inc., said, "There is a lot of discussion in the cable industry about the need to provide internet content to the living room. Unlike current offerings which provide 'best efforts' delivery of Internet video, Virgin Media has redefined the term 'over the top' by providing dedicated bandwidth for these services within the cable video plant and by unifying the consumption experience for end users. |
Re: Slow speeds since Tivo install
The only things guaranteed bandwidth are linear tv streams and VoD streams. I do note the use of 'cable video plant' mentioned quite specifically there.
I guess they could, maybe, be using the QoS they have set up to police the traffic shaping to prioritise TiVo traffic, there's certainly nothing in the configuration files the boxes are pulling that proritises them and definitely nothing in the upstream direction this would require a different service flow type. Obviously that's where the segregation ends, the TiVo's register on the same CMTS as every other set top, and every cable modem not on the overlay network. |

If the symptoms are regular @ "peak times" why not power off Tivo box for a couple of days to (dis)prove? Mind you "withdrawal" symptoms may be worse than the BB issue? ;) |
Re: Slow speeds since Tivo install
Not really, if it were that it would be affecting only when the TiVo were in use. They aren't going to be nailing up 10Mb/s of downstream for each TiVo box :)

Re: Slow speeds since Tivo install
The upload speed is better than what it was before, 2.1mb and its usually below 1mb
As of 13.54 today my speed is 19.48mb and upload speed is 1.91mb so its better today will test it again around 7pm. Remember my speed is 20mb (up to) so that is a good result for now. ---------- Post added at 13:57 ---------- Previous post was at 13:56 ---------- https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/10/4.png ---------- Post added at 13:58 ---------- Previous post was at 13:57 ---------- I'm going to test it again whilst using on demand features in just a minute ---------- Post added at 14:00 ---------- Previous post was at 13:58 ---------- After opening a programme from Catch up tv: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/10/5.png ---------- Post added at 14:04 ---------- Previous post was at 14:00 ---------- And during recording 2 programmes and watching a programme from Catch up TV at the same time: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/10/6.png ---------- Post added at 14:07 ---------- Previous post was at 14:04 ---------- And finally after recording 2 programmes and watching a video on You Tube via Tivo: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2011/10/7.png ---------- Post added at 14:08 ---------- Previous post was at 14:07 ---------- Like I said will do another speedtest later. |
