Take power back from EU, says Sir John Major
The eurozone crisis could give the UK an opportunity to grab back powers from Europe, Sir John Major said today and although l believe she should grab powers back from Europe l still believe we should still stay in the EU but what are your views on this.

The EU sticks it nose in so many areas where it shouldn't(eg employment conditions), that is the problem. If a country wants to implement certain proposals outside the EUs proper remit, then they are able to do so, if they don't want to or change their mind, then it is their democratic right to do so.
The EU along with some other supranational agreements(eg ECHR, NB I know it's not connected to the EU) is just a way for the Left to impose on people/countries and sidestep the little matter of democracy in the process. |

Douglas Carswell:
"Put simply, Europe cannot best be organised by deliberate design. From the Common Fisheries Policy to the common currency, being part of the EU means trying to do things according to some kind of “blue print” determined by a Brussels elite. It makes things more or less bound to go wrong." http://theonlinesociety.com/2011/10/...-leave-the-eu/ |

that's probably the truest statement on the EU i have ever heard ---------- Post added at 19:25 ---------- Previous post was at 19:23 ---------- We should remember that just as the EU is a good idea in principle ...so is communism ...getting them to work however is another matter |

It is a longtime since the EU was worth the hassle of being part of it as it stands right now there is more bad to it then good and for that alone we should pull out and go it alone for a bit. I am not and never would suggest having nothing to do with our european neighbours we need them and they need us but a free trade and cooperation agreement is more practical then a federal superstate.
Once upon a time us brits were looked down on and sneered at a little for our scepticism of the eu but i know many people now from all over who share it and would rather no longer be part of the brussels big project. This crisis might be the best thing to happen showing up all that is bad with the eu and finally making some countries\politicians realise it isn't the way forward and it is time for somethig much smaller and simpler to gaurantee peace and good trade. You can smother a pig in perfume but at the end of the day it is and always will be a pig much like the eu in it's current form. |

I'd agree with you Sirius m8 if it wasn't for the fact the most vocal people i talk too lately against the eu have been germans lol. As for the french they are so scared of another european war they just go along with anything they think will prevent it no matter how stupid, peace at any price. That's the thing though this isn't the europe of old i honestly don't think we need to be bound together in vast federalism to ensure peace we have evolved a little.
Get us a decent and fair free trade and cooperation on common matters treaty that doesn't try and take sovereign powers by the front or as more often then not the back door and wollah there you have it a happy europe. People have seen what happens when you try and knit completely diffferent cultures together in the past. It starts out niceish but always ends up with a gun at people's heads because human nature being what it is it simply doesn't work in practice though as with so many things is fantastic on paper and as an idea. |

Ok. We really need to be able to address Germany outside of a context involving Hitler or WW2. It was over 60 years go, let it go....
(As for France, they had the disadvantage of being on the front line and landlocked with Germany. We had the considerable advantage of the English Channel, a Soviet distraction and even then we weren't exactly having an easy time of it before America joined in). |
