Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband
Hi all new to the forums and hoping someone can help me out as I'm a bit of a noob.
I have VM 30MB cable with superhub, its hard wired to my desktop, first few days great speeds of this... https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/10/69.png All last week up until Friday it was around 25 to 32mbps on download and about 1.1 to 1.4 in upload, the weekend though very slow speeds like this... https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/10/70.png But would go on and off to 10mbps to about 22mbps. I had a technician come around for un related matters to one of my V+ boxes and mentioned the internet, he found it all very strange as signals all fine / perfect, ran speed tests and all coming back around 20mbps mark, he then mentioned previous customer had kaspersky security suite and caused lots of issues, I said so do I he switched it off and speeds were slightly improved around 23 to 24mbps but said still funny as you should be getting 30mpbs+, so he used my laptop which is connected via wifi turned kaspersky off on that and the laptop was getting this... https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2011/10/71.png He couldn't do much more to help and left. But how can my desktop hard wired be getting a slower speed than my wifi laptop at the other end of the house which is showing good up and download speeds. I've now un installed Kaspersky and using VM's own security suite for now, my desktop speeds are now around 25mbps but still no where near the 30+ that he said I should be getting. Has anyone get any suggestions at all could it be something else running slowing down etc? |
Re: Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband
firstly, use Microsofts firewall and download, install MSE. get rid of VMs security suite.
your desktops not stable by the looks of it. does the speedtest glitch when you run it? |

Unfortunately this will probably be a long troubleshooting process. The problem could be caused by a vast number of things on a desktop so try the quoted above and then if that fails to improve anything we shall try other things. Simple things to check in the meantime Run a full virus scan (typical microsoft response) Also when your speedtesting stick to one server so we can get a consistent result. Preferably the ones showing the 38mbps. Also anyone that can answer. What are the overheads on 30Mbit or is that a glitched result? Thread Appears to be in I.T section, any chance of a merge :P ? |

Will do the firewall and get MSE. As for speedtest in what sense do you mean glitch? it runs fine send back ping and does download speeds but takes a while to test the upload says connecting then like 20 seconds later starts testing, when I had it first installed no problems would do all requested tasks quickly now it it doesn't |
Re: Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband
does the speedo meter jump up and down while testing?

Re: Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband
Hi there yes its all over the place starts at say 8 then hits like 50 then settles back in the 20's, its like revving your car up sort of thing.
Currently scanning for viruses etc. |

Re: Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband

Re: Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband

|
Re: Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband
is vista on all your machines? do they run at a fairly quick speed or do you endure lag, slow responses?
heres the best software to clear out temp files > http://download.piriform.com/ccsetup311.exe |
Re: Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband
have 7 on my laptop and speed on that appears fine, desktop is vista and at times appears sluggish / thinks for a while before loading a program or a document etc.
Many thanks for your continued help also de cluttering stuff I just don't use like those games that come pre installed or trial software, if doesn't improve speed at least frees up disk space etc |
Re: Slow Speeds 30MB VM Broadband
well vistas renowned for that. regarding your pre installed stuff. the program i've posted a link to (ccleaner) has features within it to uninstall programs of your choice and also disable/enable start up programs which run even if you don't need them to run.
open up ccleaner > click tools > start up > take a look and disable those you don't need running 24/7 uninstaller is pretty straight forward, you decide. restart your system after your done, post back what impact its had. |
