The jarrow march 2011

It is always sad when people have to go to extreme lengths to achieve something to survive.

I never thought in my lifetime that l would ever hear about The Jarrow March in an area where things have vastly improved in financial terms, since the days of the last march.

But the way things are going is that Kids won't have the most important thing to survive and that is Jobs, the unemployment record in this country isd now very high and the cuts being brought in by the coalition is now staring to bite severely, with redundancies to our armed services and we are now depending on volunteers ect.

I give my support to this march, and l think everyone should be the same, I am five years away from retiring, BUT am in fear of losing the job l love to do, through job cuts..

The politics in the initial post aside I am happy to give this march wholehearted support, our youth deserve a far better deal than the one politicians of every colour have given them.

Organiser Claire Laker-Mansfield said: “We are marching to demand that the Government invests in a decent future for young people... there are almost a million out of work.”

Agreed.

However, a relevant point from the BBC link
Quote:

In 1936, 73% of the people in the town were unemployed and in 2011 it is 9%
so not quite on the same scale of deprivation and poverty.

I don't think the situation now compared to 1936 is even similar .Although unemployment is rising it isn't as high as it was in the early 80's .Today we have a comprehensive welfare system ,it has it's problems but it is there, back then the system was still in it's infancy ,people were literally starving ,being forcibly evicted and where treated as a underclass .Society is totally different now ,we have safeguards in place to prevent the sort of poverty that the original marchers protested against .All this march will achieve will be to give cameron some tv time making supportive noises and slagging of the labour party

Agreed Hugh it's nowhere near the same scale, however youth unemployment and underemployment is truly horrifying and is disenfranchising an entire generation from society.

Once again, I agree with you - not sure what the answer is, though....

In the current climate there have to be winners and losers sadly, everyone can't win, so the only solutions will have to hurt other people.

I suspect you and I are in the position where we lose whatever so it's fine :D

but to be fair, even when we lose, we are still "comfortable"....
