power to my laptop

I have an HP dv9000 laptop which until recently worked fine. It now refuses to start on the first depress of the power button and sometimes can kick in after 10-15mins. My imediate thought was the power button is faulty, yet I'm now wondering about the battery as I've now been opening the battery housing and taking the battery out and putting it back again. When trying startup again, it kicks in first time. Although battery level indicates fully charged is this a false reading? The laptop 4-5yrs the battery is the original and the laptop is used regularly. If anyone can shed any light on this issue, I would be extremely grateful. MEL

Does it power up if you remove the battery and just use the main power?

Simple answer is yes, when I read your post (just) I shut down and removed battery - restarted which is how I am currently connected. The first time this issue started it would'nt do this so I'm somewhat surprised really. Having said that under battery/mains connected it started first time this morning. Which incidentally is the method I normally function by.

Be careful about messing with battery packs with laptops. If you disconnect the internal cells, the battery management circuits inside can refuse to work again rendering what was a good battery bricked.
