Laptop & PC connection to Router
 

I hope someone can help me. I have a home PC (Windows XP) connected to a VirginMedia Motorola Surboard modem via LAN. I have now bought a Sony Vaio laptop which I want to connect wireless to the internet. I bought a Belkin wireless router. I connected the supplied ethernet cable from router to modem and set up Wifi on my laptop which works fine but I then lose internet on my PC and if I put it back on my PC I lose internet on my laptop. My PC is pretty old and has no ethernet ports to connect it directly to my new router, just the LAN one to my modem - is this essential for it to work?? Or is it something to do with the IP addresses? I bought a USB to ethernet adapter but couldn't set it up as I get a Code 39 error on my PC but that is for another forum!! If someone can tell me basically how I should set up I would be really grateful.

For both machines to work it is vital that they are both connected to the router. If your old pc does not have an ethernet port then you will have to add a network card to it so that you can make an ethernet connection to the router.

It would be helpful if you could give us the make and model of the old computer.

Have you plugged the cable from the modem into the correct socket on the router? It should be in the socket marked WAN, If you do not have a WAN socket you may have the wrong type of router. Make sure you switch everything off before connecting any cables and then back on once connected.

There should be some LAN (ethernet) ports on the back of the router. Plug your cable from the home PC into the back of the router.

I don't have a LAN port on the back of my router just 4 grey ethernet ports and a yellow ethernet port (which plugs into the modem). My router is a Belkin F5D8236-4 v3. Is there a wireless router that has a LAN port?? If so that might solve my problem. My computer is a Dell Dimension 5100.

The 4 grey ports are the LAN ports, I have a feeling that your PC is being connected by a USB port ( that will look like a little slit about 10X3 mm insize).

I ave looked at the 5100 specs and it should have an ethernet port on the back. You will need to connect this to a grey port on the router.

my computer is connected to the modem by a lead with a very square fitting on the end which goes into the modem and a usb fitting on the other end which goes into my PC, it is chunkier than a USB (which is oblong and thin). This is the problem because my router only has ports for ethernet cables. My USB to ethernet adapter might have solved the problem because I could have plugged an ethernet lead into it and into my router but I get a Code 39 error.

Its possible that the drivers for your adapter are missing or corrupted.
You have three possible routes
1. Re install adapter drivers unless adapter is broken
2. Get new adapter
3. get ethernet card for PC assuming you have a spare slot for it.
