Any ideas on getting progs off an unbootable V+ HD ?

Hi, Following a few weeks of listening to what sounds like a miniature old fashioned typewriter being used where my V+ box is, when its recording, and even when it isnt recording , the occasional 20 clicks it emits, I am now with message V+ unavailable. I had a scare a week or so ago when looking in on the recordings list it said no recordings to view, when in fact it was 80% full. I rebooted the box via mains and they were visible. Rebooting the unit via mains turn off now only sees a lot of clicking then the V+ not available message again. This very much appears to be a hardware issue, all my recordings are on that box, a years worth that I must get access to. Is there any way of getting them off now ? I have been clearing space on my panny dvd HD recorder to capture them and instead the damn thing has died. If it was a PC HD then £500 and a guy in an air conditioned lab would get used !
Strikes me that the technology is crap, mass produced without dependability, as others also hear the clicking V+ box. At least mine was silent for the best part of a year.

Other than playing the program and using a DVD or video recorder to record it in real time. There's no other way that doesn't go against virgins terms and conditions.
