cable connections from TiVo?
Hello,
I have recently bought new HDtv and had a TiVo box installed. I am wondering why I have both a scart connection from the box and also a hd cable. I thought you did not need the scart lead anymore, but the technician fitted them all. also, the background picture on my tv seems blurred and I'm worried that the cable connections or tv settings are not right. Please help someone who knows nothing about technology!!!! :( |
Re: cable connections from TiVo?
If you have an HDTV then you only need the HDMI connected. The Scart is for SDTVs or for connecting a DVD recorder or similar.

Re: cable connections from TiVo?
thanks for your reply Lew, then why has the Virgin engineer connected the box to my tv with a Scart and a HDMI cable? I don't really understand it!!

Re: cable connections from TiVo?
It might be that the SCART lead is taking priority over the HDMI in your TV, so you are watching SD. Removing the SCART lead will rule this out.
---------- Post added at 07:03 ---------- Previous post was at 07:01 ---------- I can think of a reason why the tech may have connected both cables. When leaving the house, he leaves both the TV and TiVo on. But some people have trouble finding the button to select the HDMI input on their TV, so connecting both cables reduces the chances of them getting no picture at all next time the TV is turned on. |

And no repeat fault.... :)

Re: cable connections from TiVo?
Some times, in order to set up the TV and box for an HDMI connection, it is necessary to access the menus on the TV and TIVO/HD box. To do that you connect the scart first, chose the preferences and then connect the HDMI and disconnect the scart. It may well be that your TV is defaulting to the scart, so you should disconnect.Happy watching.

Re: cable connections from TiVo?
thank you for your replies. If a scart lead is not needed from a Tivo box then why is there a connection point at the back? Is the HD lead ok for every channel , even ones that aren't HD? I find my television quite hard to watch on some channels as the background is slightly blurred sometimes, is this a common problem nowadays with modern hd tvs? Sorry for all the questions!!

Re: cable connections from TiVo?
A SCART output is on the box in case someone wants a TiVo but does not have a HD TV, or at least a one without HDMI.
HDMI is used for every channel and will show SD channels upscaled meaning a better picture than watching SD channels through a SD output (ie. SCART). As for the blurring, do you have Motion Blur turned on your TV? I'm not sure if it was enabled by default on mine, but that could be what is causing the blurring. |
Re: cable connections from TiVo?
The SCART socket is primarily there for people whose TV doesn't have HDMI sockets. But it can also be used to connect to a VCR/DVD or to send the picture to another TV in a different room.
You can use the HDMI lead for every channel. I'm not really sure what you mean about the background being blurred. It's normal for some parts of a picture to be out of focus, and it's often the background - that's how lenses work, including the ones in your eyes (see the examples here). But try adjusting the picture settings on your TV, and you may be able to make it more to your taste. |
Re: cable connections from TiVo?
Thank you so much for your replies, you are all so helpful! How then do you adjust the picture settings and how would you know what is right for your tv?
