ESPN HD Very Quiet

Anyone else notice how the Chelsea game on ESPN HD is really really quiet. I had to turn my amp up to volume 38 to get the same volume level that I would normally get on 26.

My Amp is showing its broadcasting in Dolby Stereo 2.0 - it should be 5.1

Yes it was the same on my Sky+HD box. Only the commentary was low,the chat in the studio and adds blasted out.

The sound on all my HD channels is lower than their SD equivalents.

Re: ESPN HD Very Quiet

The HD channels (apart from ITV HD) have Dolby audio, whereas the SD ones have stereo MPEG audio. The MPEG audio is 'compressed' so that quiet sounds sound louder than they should really do, relative to the loud sounds.

On the other hand, Dolby isn't compressed as much, so that the loud bits sound REALLY loud. But 99% of the time the audio level isn't loud, it's just "normal", which is why Dolby sounds quieter on average. It's a good thing.

However, if "Only the commentary was low,the chat in the studio and adds blasted out", that's a problem at source.

ESPN HD has always been quiet.

No matter how many times i shout at it during football matches, it doesn't say a word.

Hard to argue with it...just gives me the cold shoulder :(
