Xbox Live - Not Connecting via Home Plug
 

Hi - Newbie here. :waving:

I currently have an Xbox 360 connected to my D-Link 615 router via a Homeplug system. We have two of these in the house and the other one works perfectly well. We have moved the Xbox into another room and since then the other home plug will connect communicate properly with the router.

Sometimes it will sign in, but will soon lose the connection, while other time it won't connect at all. I've tried the basics of rebooting the modem and router, and even trying a different ethernet cable in the Homeplug but no luck.

I've tried the Network Troubleshooter on the Xbox 360, which came up with:

I've gone into the Configure Network page on the Xbox, and the settings are as follows:
All of the above looks a bit dodgy as the IP address shown is different from what my router has associated with the MAC address of the console. When I log into the Router and check the DHCP Client List it shows the Xbox's MAC address but shows the assigned IP as 192.168.0.100. The subnet mask also looks incorrect (rest of the computers on the network are using the 255.255.255.0 subnet).

I have basic network knowledge but it is unfortunatly just that, so was hoping someone would be able to help me in resolving this problem. I'm assuming that I need to manually assign the Xbox a correct IP address, change the subnet to match the rest of the network and set the default gateway to the routers IP address... How would I go about assigning a static IP on the D-Link 615 using default firmware? Can I set the Xbox a static IP and leave the other devices on the network on DHCP as it seems to be working ok on them.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, just a bit confused by it all.

Yep I see the problem, your router is assigning whats called an Automatic Private Address, which is the 169.xxx.xxx.xx, when it should be assigning a 192.xxx.xxx.xx address. Either shut everything down, this includes computers, games consoles etc, power off the modem and router. Wait 30 seconds the power the modem on first, wait for the lights to settle, then the router, and wait for that to settle, then try powering on the xbox before any PC's just to see if you get a connection. If you do, great, if you dont, try setting the xbox to use a static IP address.

Factually incorrect. The router has nothing to do with it. The NIC on the Xbox cannot obtain a DHCP address and after a timeout period it will assign itself the automatic IP address of 169.x.x.x. The router does not assign it.

Saying that - the OP has a network issue.

Can you plug the xbox direct into the router - bypass anything else and does it then work?

Thanks for the reply. Tried rebooting everything and switching the console on first but it still wouldn't connect to the Internet. When I went into the Network Management screen it was showing the IP address as 169.254.125.14 with no default gateway.

When assigning a static IP address do I just type an IP address i.e if the router was 192.168.0.1 I could assign the XBox 192.168.0.100, the Subnet mask of 255.255.255.0? What would the default gateway be? The IP address of the router I.E 192.168.0.1?

Would I leave the DNS Settings on Automatic? And finally would do I need to log into the router and assign or set the IP address? For exaple would I need to log into the DLink firmware and define that 192.168.0.100 has been assigned to the XBox?

Yeah the console seems to be fine when connected directly to the Router.



Edit - Just gave it another go and it's automatically assigned a proper IP address this time (192.168.0.100, 255.255.255.0 and 192.168.0.1). When I try to connect to Xbox Live I get an error message. But when I do a network test on the Xbox to try and connect to another PC on the network it completes successfully and listed the other 2 computers.


Not sure if the Xbox responds to Ping requests, but when I tried pinging the IP address of the Xbox I get:
