Windows 7 and older software?
 

I'd like to load some of the software I've bought and installed on this PC over the years onto my new Win7 laptop. A couple of questions arise a) how likely is it that XP compatible software bought before Win7 was launched is going to work on the new machine and b) are there any licensing issues to worry about?

The programmes in question are stuff like photo-editing (Adobe Photoshop Elements v.4, Microsoft Digital Image Suite v.9, Corel PaintshopPro Ultimate Photo X2) plus a few old PC utilities type programmes for stuff like file recovery and shredding.

Are there any other issues/potential problems I should consider when trying to do this? I read somewhere that I should first uninstall the software from the old machine before putting it on the new one. :confused:

One other thing. I have an unused Trust wireless keyboard and mouse set which work through a single USB receiver thingy and are supposedly XP and Vista compatible. I'd quite like to use the mouse only with the laptop if that's possible but am not sure if it'll work alone and/or with Win 7.

Most software will work, either directly or via compatibility mode.. You might need to get the latest update for them.

As for the trust keyboard/mouse you can use one device only, the usb dongle should be recognised by Win7 has a HID, if not then you may find drivers for it.. What's the part numbers on the devices?

I also have a Trust wireless keyboard and mouse that connects through a ps/2 connection. The mouse broke a while back so i'm now just using the keyboard without any problems. I did find that the software that came with it wouldn't work properly with windows7 and I couldn't customise the media buttons properly so I uninstalled it. The keyboard driver that cames with windows7 works fine and all the buttons work.

You could run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on your XP machine. I know you're not going to upgrade that PC, but it would still tell you if the software is Win7 compatible. If you have your Trust wireless dongle connected when running the check then you'll also get a result for that.

If any of the software uses online licence activation then you may have to phone the respective supplier and persuade them that you really do have the software installed on only one PC.

The manual isn't exactly comprehensive and the FAQs don't assist much either. It doesn't say if the mouse can be used on its own.

I could just try it but what I'm worried about it that I might plug the new stuff in, have some sort of problem getting it to work and lose the use of the integral keyboard and/or touchpad at the same time. Incidentally should this sort of hardware be connected prior to booting up or doesn't it matter?

Not having any joy getting the new mouse to work. It is Win7 compatible but, as can be seen from the above link, the 'manual' is basically a single sheet with half a dozen graphics on it so somewhat less than comprehensive. Anyway I started up the laptop and put batteries in the mouse then connected the wireless dongle thingy to the USB port of the laptop and nothing hapened. I then tried the other USB port just in case with the same result. To see if the mouse and keyboard have to be installed together in order to be detected/work properly I then removed the dongle, put batteries in the keyboard, reinstated the dongle but still nothing happened. Nothing to even indicate that a USB device had been attached to the laptop.

I may well be doing something obvious wrong so could anyone tell me if I'm overlooking something please?

No CD was provided with the keyboard/mouse set but the website states that drivers may be required and can be downloaded. Surely, though, Win7 would alert me to the need for drivers when I connected the devices wouldn't it?

I can't speak for everyone that might be using Trust devices but I've had problems with them and windows 7 in the past ended up using microsoft products and their support is crap I didn't get much from them either other than its my setup as it works on their systems.

Oddly enough a friend phoned me yesterday about a similar issue with a Trust mouse. This is one of the laptop mini-mouse variety with a tiny USB stick.

He plugged it into the laptop and Win7 gave it's usb sound but still the mouse would not work. Tried it in a usb port on the other side of the machine and it worked.

Seems like there could be issues with Trust's USB implementation.

This is what I found strange, when I plug in the USB wireless dongle thingy, there is no sound or other sign that it's been connected let alone any sign of action with the keyboard or mouse. I tried both USB ports and it made no difference. Trust have suggested a change of batteries in the equipment and for me to download some software to re-pair the devices but I haven't got around to trying it yet.

Just an update - gave up with the Trust stuff, returned it and bought a Microsoft Wireless Desktop set for the laptop which installed in seconds and seems to be working perfectly. :)
