Sky Broadband speeds
 

hello guys, I have sky broadband (http://www.sky.com/shop/broadband-talk/) and so far i have been quite happy. However they say that my broadband is up to 20MB but i have never been able to get not even close that bandwith! Which broadband tests can you guys advise me. Please let me know. Also, I would like compare my speed with yours. Currently I am reaching in my area (north london) 8/9 mb. Is that good or bad? thanks everyone

Depends entirely on distance from the exchange and quality of the line.

For instance Sam Knows tells me I am 700m from my exchange. I can only get 10meg from a 24meg Be Unlimited connection.

Don't forget the distance from the Exchange is as the crow flies and your line may be aluminium.

Just a quick Sky BB question for the more tech savvy

How can the Sky BB network cope with all the Anytime+ traffic , SD films 1gb and HD 4gb with people watching one after another ?

If when you signed upto Sky BB you were told to expect 20Mb then your 9Mb speed is disgusting and I would be on the phone shouting and telling the internet world what a crap service you have.

Usually Sky policy is to tell new users to expect LESS than the speed they will get. If someone at sky told you you'll get 20Mb then ring sky.

They will for a FACT allow you to disconnect for free because they are not interested in unhappy BB customer as they are currently trying to build a good reputation. So they're releasing anyone who is getting less than to quoted speeds.

If you were told to expect 8/9Mb and you're getting 8/9Mb then I don't see a problem.

You have ADSL. The quoted speeds are always "Up to" (as you yourself even said: "up to 20"). As Mick Fisher said, the speed you can get will depend on the length *and* quality of your phone line.


Whether your speed of 8-9Mbps is good or not depends on what you line could potentially handle and what you're actually getting. It may be that you could get more, it may be that that's as fast as it can go.

I have Sky BB Unlimited, but can only get around 6Mbps. Why? Because of the length of my line. It would be the same whichever ISP I had.


Some things to try:

Log onto your router (http:/192.168.0.1, username = admin and password = sky or password, unless you've changed them [and if you haven't changed them, change them!]). Find the status page and post your connection stats... Namely the downstream connection speed, downstream attenuation, and downstream noise margin.

It depends how close you are to the exchange, not where you live. I live in North London also and get around 12-14Mb on Sky connection.

A year or two back I was on BT Broadband upto 8mb , and my router reported line attenuation of 38 , my ip profile was 7500 Giving me upto 6.5mbps throughput , I took my number over to VM. What speed can I expect on Sky BB and will I need an engineer out as the line is still in working order just not active , will my attenuation still be around the same ?
