Virgin Media pulls out of Westminster Cable

Virgin Media has pulled out of the Westminster area. The leased BT Cable franchise is to close and has urged customers to find alternatives by 2012 when the service will stop working.

The Milton Keynes franchise will NOT be effected by this.

The decision is purely because even if BT agreed to help upgrade the network, local planning laws and conservation rules for the City of Westminster do not permit the installation of any such telecommunications construction.

The service in the City of London has already been ceased serving Barbican as the landowners invested in a communal IRS system and the NTL signal was switched off in 2005/6.

This is yet another stupid policy covering conservation. It is pointless, the City of Westminster is nothing special, the only areas of interest are around the houses of parliament, the areas where people actually live should not really be classified as conservation areas. Tower blocks a conservation area?

Therefore, if you are unable to get TV without Virgin Media's analogue service, then you are going to have serious problems getting Digital TV.

I would advise people to contact the council for advice.
