Netbook update

Hi
I have just bought a Samsung netbook that comes with a pretty limited version on Win 7 Starter. I cannot even change the wallpaper.

Can I just enter my Win 7 Pro key last used on a dead laptop using Windows upgrade anytime?

I don't see why I should have to shell out on another license when I already have one that is now unused.

TIA

Not sure about Anytime Upgrade - does it give you the opportunity to put in a key rather than credit card?
You might be able to use the key to reinstall it, but you will almost certainly need to phone MS to validate the key as the hardware has changed.
However, are you sure the Netbook is up to Home Premium? If it's only got 1GB RAM, probably not. Have you run the upgrade advisor from the MS site to check?

I've got a Netbook with W7 Starter.Personally I think there is very little point in upgrading to Home Premium or higher

Most Netbooks won't support full Aero, and so far haven't actually missed anything else that isn't in it

Plenty of other reasons to upgrade to Pro - offline files support, proper backups, remote desktop to name a few. All depends if you use any of these features obviously.

I think I will stick with Win Starter. It seems to do all I need and I have managed to get it to work remotely with my VPN and don't want to risk MS refusing upgrades because I have changed summat.

I will however look at upgrading the RAM to 2Gig.

Thanks to all who replied.

Just for reference, the wife got a Samsung netbook last year with Win7 Home on it. I used one of my TechNet keys (for testing obviously) and was able to upgrade it to Win7 Ultimate. So yes, it should be possible - as long as I guess your key can be activated again.
