upload speed updates for Edinburgh

As a resident of the beautiful city of Edinburgh on the 50 Mbit connection I have patiently been waiting for anything to come from VM about the upgrade in upload speed.

The update sheet does not seem to have been altered since last year and on it Edinburgh was listed as being planned. Is this a subtle use of the wording for being forgotten about?

Does anybody have any idea if / when Edinburgh will be getting the upgrade to the 5 Mbit upload speed.

Between August and February/March next year. Ex-TW areas such as ours have been left to rot for ages and hence require far more fixing and upgrading before the new speeds can be handled.

My house has tele-west sockets in it and people have had the faster upload since late 2010 so i presume theres a little more to it then that :)

If you drive around edinburgh you'll see little grey cabinets popping up, there are having to do a mass upgrade to all the amplifiers in the street, Edinburgh will be one of the last areas to recieve the upload increase due to the amount of work needed

Ours, not yours. Ignition knows far more about it than me, but the short story is some areas are stuck on amps and diplex filters capped at 30Mhz upstream where 50-80Mhz are required for full DOCSIS 2/3 upstreams. Amps and filters all need to be replaced to accomodate the higher frequencies without which there is not enough capacity for improved upstreams. Some lines and cables are also in poor condition and need replacing. Finally, several homes or even a whole street share one drop from the cab rather than one per property so juggling tolerances can get a bit messy.

Good to see VM finally investing in the network with the mass overhaul, hopefully the above-ground cabs will improve serviceability and all-new equipment will put us in a better position for future upgrades, rather than being another excuse to delay network maintenance because the equipment is newer...
