Tivo other tuner selection
 

Hello,

Not sure if this has been covered elsewhere, but unfortunately I can't find an answer. Under the info box I know you can switch to things on the other tuners, but how does it choose which things it's recording? I'm assuming you have to watch a channel for a while before it switches (I flicked between various channels and it still kept one I'd watched a while back), but I can't be sure. Anyone got a definite answer?

it records the things you ask it to

only thing of relevance to end user (us) as far as tuners concerned is that we need to understand it can only record maximum of 3 things at a time - which tuner it uses for which job has no realistic end user application or significance

am I missing something?

If you hit the info button and scroll down the left hand side there's a icon with R on it in circle, with two more similar (but smaller) circles behind it. This is 'recording' some channels that I haven't set to record, but are ones that I've been watching. I can go to these and go back in time an hour or so, but I don't know how it chooses which channels it does this for.

Even if it's not recording will it buffer three channels then?

That's right - I'm just trying to work out the criteria as to which ones it buffers.

Also turned it on this morning (out of standby) and found it was still buffering (I could watch the last hour of tv before the box was on) - is there a way to turn it off completely or does it just do this by default?

I dont know what the difference between standby and on. I assume it does save a few watts in standby as it doesnt have to send a signal to the TV.

I think the tuners are set to whatever channel they were last recording recording and only change when when something new is to be watched. I have seen the same channel being on two channels.

I discovered day1 that when tivo is recording on all 3 that you need the ability to switch from the current tuner and the info gadget answers that problem
I have to assume that is the only reason the gadget is there because I still cannot see any end user application and never intended for "switching tuners"
It just something that has primary use and people are looking for other applications that don't exist
I'm sure I've seen it with only one other program/tuner in use

Ok I've figured out the buffering thing. Basically whichever tuner you switch to it will keep in the background. So if I'm on channel 101 and switch to one of the others (using the tuner selection menu under the info button) it will keep 101 in the background. I can then hop around various other channels - say I leave it on 103 then switch to the other tuner (not the 101) I can have 101 and 103 in the background.



Not sure if that makes sense, but I know what I mean!

The end user application is being able to rewind within multiple buffers.
Say I'm watching a film on one channel, then I want to flick over to the news or something in an ad break, I might switch back after the film has already came back on and so can then rewind the bit I missed.

Or I might be watching two football matches at once, focusing on one but flicking over to the other to check the score, and if someone's scored I could rewind it to see the goal.

There's plenty of applications for it.

In addition, it's worth noting that you need two available tuners for it to work.

I've had instances when I've been flicking between two channels in between ad breaks and in the mean time a couple of recordings start on other channels wiping the buffer of one of said channels
