What is a good speed ?
 

Hi I want to no what is a good speed for a Virgin 100mb broadband am sure people that have the 100mb are not getting near the 100 mark well I have run speed tests and never go above 91 between 88 to 91 I mean is this ok ? I use to have 50mb but got 47mb which is understandable as you won't get the full speed.

Of course its ok? LOL the average speed in the uk is arround 11 mb/s**

88-91 is about 90% the speed you are paying for which is phenomenal :) You should try downloading some files and see what the transfer rates are on them; that is the true test of speed.

When I had the 100Mb I would get 97-101Mb with a 25ms ping via the Paris server on speedtest.net.

Or I would get a 7ms ping but only 65mb via Birmingham server.

I would want at least 93mb to be happy.

Not wanting to be rude but for what your paying you could be getting 40 mbs out of 100 and still be getting far closer to the speed advertised then you would with any other isp in the u.k. short of paying for a business line or a leased line

Have been doing a speedtest every 30 minutes and have been getting the following results sometimes download is 89mb but mostly has been above 90mb I hope this is ok I have not yet gone above 91mb also hope the ping is ok is normally between 33ms to 38ms and will sometimes drop to 8 or 9

Getting my advertised speed has never been a problem for me. Getting a service that's usable by a family of 4 all online at once in the evening seems impossible.

I would only be impressed if I got the full 100Mb, not that I would moan at 93Mb. I am used to getting a constant 50Mb+ on my 50Mb connection, and have done ever since I joined up 2 or 3 years ago. I guess I have been spoilt.

Thing is the speed cap in the config file for 50mb is 53mb, in order to inflate average speed tests closer to the 50mb mark even with congestion, variance, and overheads.

The speed cap in the config file for 100mb was, last I recall, pretty much bang on 100mb, so minus overheads and fluctuations most speedtest results will return lower, and very, very few will ever actually hit 100.

So ultimately you're actually comparing a 53mb service vs. a 100mb service, and percentage of target speed would be a better measure than absolute speed in terms of technical system performance, but then again as a customer being sold a "50mb" service the absolute speed might be more relevant.
