Belkin Router and Virgin Modem pain!!
Hi everyone
I'm new here and I'm having abit of a problem! I've had wireless for sometime now but all I've ever had was a d-link wireless router connected to the Virgin/NTL modem. Since buying the belkin router the the connection keeps dipping in and out, then cutting out and completely not working and then whenever we spoke to virgin it magically started working again and the stopped working and getting into a circle of finding myself on the phone to them all the time!:mad: After ALOT of complaining to virgin they sent us out a new modem and also sent out one of their guys to come and find out what the problem was, he was as much use as a fart in a space suit so we ended up being back at square one! I've tried the hard reset, contacting belkin, contacting virgin, every tech guy in my family have tried to get it working and I'm close to throwing the thing at the wall.:mad::mad: Im sick and tired of virgin fobbing my off and blaming the router and belkin blaming virgin! I hope someone on here can help me I'm in such a funk and I just want it sorted!!! Thankyou :) |

OK, firstly welcome to the forum, you've posted in the wrong section :)
You start the post by saying everything used to work until you replace the router, a router that is not supplied by VM .. so to me that suggests the new router is the problem.. VM will not support you as they did not supply the router and sending out a new modem is just a waste of everyone time. As for sending someone out to sort it, the techs are only trained and allowed to deal with VM equipment and that doesn't even cover VM's routers, so that's probably just been a way for someone to get you off the phone. You're saying the wireless keeps dropping in and out ? the modem has nothing to do with the wireless, so the issue is 100% Belkins. |

If you ring in the agent should ask you if you are using a 3rd party router and then ask you to disconnect it and try the connection direct and if you get a good solid connection the issue must be with the router.
So the is little point replacing a modem if it is the router and also no engineer should ever be sent for a router issue as they are not trained to sort out routers and you could have had a £30 charge levied for a wasted engineer visit. Are you sure that the router you have purchased is suitable for a cable connection and that you have not inadvertently purchased a ADSL router. Again if you connect direct to the modem and it works then its the router and not a Virginmedia issue. |

As the fault started when you changed the router it sounds like it's a network issue and as such nothing to do with Virgin Media. Thread moved to the Networking section

There are several possible issues, my first action (if you can) would be to return the router as I dont rate belkin at all, I used to have a belkin router and it was complete rubbish and would crash all the time.

I had an issue with my Belkin router but did a firmware update and it's been fine since.

I have a Belkin N+ router, and I was having an issue where it kept dropping out every night. A wired PC worked, but the wireless didn't, so it was obviously the router.
There are other wireless networks in the vicinity, so I changed the channel from auto to 1, and so far the connection has never dropped out. If it was a neighbour I just hope they never change to channel 1; they are probably happy that their connection has magically stabilised now I have changed my channel. |

The d-link router did the same thing. Until it broke. Yes it is a router for cabel modems. Whenever I diagnose the problem through internet explorer it tells me there is a problem with the DNS?? The model of the router is: F7D3302 v1 |

I have Virgin broadband with a Scientific Atlanta modem supplied by Virgin about 3 years ago. I have an old Belkin F5D7231-4 router which has been working great until recently. The modem & router is connected to an old PC which has recently been revamped and now operates on Win 7, I have a new laptop (Medion Akoya) and my OH has a very old laptop running on XP. We mainly play Zynga poker on an evening after work. I changed settings on router about 6 months ago and am on channel 11, and had no problems until recently. We play for about an hour then the laptops start to slow and finally freeze up. If we switch off the router and modem and restart them everything works fine. Thinking perhaps I should get a new router I started searching (Google) for best one to buy and found this thread. Was going for this one Belkin N Wireless Router with Simple Security Set Up & High-speed Internet Connection 300 Mbps (F5D8236uk4) on Amazon but reading this thread I am having second thoughts? |

Belkin support can be "fun" but their warranty (used to be) lifetime so you could always get support. I used to use Belkin router until I got the DLink with 50MB and now the SamKnows Netgear and it worked fine.
I did occassionally have DNS issues so hard set the DNS servers in the router rather than let them get set by VM DHCP. I think it was the DNS passthrough that didn't always work very well. |
