TiVo and NAS

I've got a Netgear ReadyNAS at home which has a built in DLNA streaming service that supports TiVo.

I've followed the instructions on the Netgear forums for enabling support and it then points me at getting the media access key from the TiVo. That page on the box shows the key and says I can use it to access "Virgin Recordings from your home network". If I connect an ethernet cable to the box, it doesn't seem to get an IP address which obviously means the NAS can't see it.

I'm guessing this is because the LAN port on the TiVo is disabled, so why does the mak page suggest I should be able to connect to the TiVo remotely? Is this some "coming soon" functionality from Virgin?

There are quite a few more things coming for TiVo so I would hope that's one of them

That would definitely be something I'd be interested in. Exciting times indeed. :D

Me also. Would be great if we could back up via the Lan port but I wonder if the programme makers would allow it.

Maybe some however I can't personally see it , the problem for VM is they don't own any of their own channels now.

You can currently back up programmes from the V+ though so it's not out of the question. Time will tell.

Yeah I agree even if this was only available on some channels content it would still be a big plus.

I hope that people are not forgetting that VM have been signing new contracts with providers for 3 screens (Online, TV and Mobile) So I can see this coming it just takes longer for the deals IMHO:confused:

More info - the NAS appears under "My Shows" - link to the Netgear forums with instructions and screenshots here:

Would be good if this could work on Virgin, not too bothered about the backing up, but if it could play other video's I've got saved on the NAS it would mean not having to turn the PS3 on.

In terms of archiving and the V+, don't forget that was output over SCART and so analogue. OK, this could be fed into a PC and digitised, but the quality wasn't / isn't great. Any archiving to NAS would be digital and so open to "manipulation". I suppose if they can get some kind of protection / DRM thing that means it will only play back on the TiVO it was recorded on, that would work.

Question

My parents are considering upgrading their multiroom box for 20.00 for a V-HD box and considering swapping the V+ for the TIVO 500gb , will it be possible in the future to watch a show recorded on the TIVO box in another room on a V-HD box.

I'm not sure. the only plans I've seen mentioned are Tivo to tivo. But as the V-HD is meant to be getting the Tivo software eventually, then maybe it will be able to do what you ask at some time in the future?

My thoughts exactly. I download content on PC, and stream to PS3. TiVo is gradually removing the arse of downloading, but to move the PS3 out of the equation for the few times I do need to stream from PC would be a plus. +1 vote from me.

Yeah, I'd love that too.
