Speed Issue Help!
 

Hi there,

I have 50meg broadband at home and never had this problem before.

I got a new pc in April - Dell XPS7100 Win 7 with wireless N card and everything was fine and my broadband speeds were straightaway continuing as normal 300mpbs etc

Then 2 weeks ago all of a sudden the connection has dropped to 54mbps and has stayed that way since.

I spoke to Virgin after being really annoyed by this and they advised that there were some utilization works being done and said they would be fixed in future etc however it wasn't clear if they had been the cause of the speed drop as they are so hard to get anything english & understandable from them.

I however since then kept having issues with connecting and loading pages - I spoke to some people who said what Virgin were doing was not the cause of the problem and they suggested I update my network drivers which I have done however, this has made no difference in that my speed is still stuck at 54mbps instead of my usual high speeds.

I am a bit lost what to do now, as I am sure my Network card is fine and windows 7 check and Dells own on board check say all working ok.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why suddenly the speed has dropped so much and possibly things to check to help sort out?

Is your issue when wired or over wireless.

Do you connect using a superhub or a standalone modem or a modem + router.

Please publish your modems power levels.

its nothing to do with WAN side traffic as virgin have stated, so mick power levels arent needed. The wireless speed is the speed of the link between the wireless card in your laptop to the superhub. It sounds to me like either the wireless speed setting has been changed in either the superhub or the laptop

Ahh! You obviously seem to know more than I do.

I thought of a wireless speed setting too but thought not to mention it until I was more informed. :)

the OP is saying that their broadband speed has changed from 300mbps to 54mbps, this is the wireless link speed, i.e. the internal speed that the laptop connects to the router. This will stop the OP receiving the full 50mb over wireless

The area utilisation is whats affecting the speeds of pages loading, and until thats fixed there will still be problems, however they can still change their LAN side speed by configuring the wireless adapter, but that wont make a difference to WAN side speeds

Hi guys,

I got into the router last night and updated firmware and also ochanged incrypton.

Made a difference and speeds now much much better although still not getting the 300mbps I was few weeks ago, but is now much more satisfactory.
