Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hi All,
I have just had a virgin media engineer come to my house to fix my problem.. which as I tried to tell the call centre on the phone it's not a hardware issue (or software) issue and it's def to do with virgin's routing. Two things: World of Warcraft gets to 90% log in and then disconnects and certain sites work (youtube.com is ok) and some don't e.g rarlab.com (makers of winrar) When I fire up my browser (Firefox, IE, Chrome) I can load youtube.com with no issue, however for example Rarlab.com just hangs and the page never loads. When I connect to my VPN (so I can watch US TV shows) I can connect to both rarlab.com and also play World of Warcraft. I also have a 3G dongle which again can connect to all these sites/games. Here are some tracert's YOUTUBE.COM VIA VIRGIN - WORKS Quote:

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hmm.
I get there fine. I do use the google dns servers though: Code:
Tracing route to rarlab.com [217.70.129.242] |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Hi Skie
Just to add I have tried it through both Virgin and OpenDNS and Google's DNS service - I dont think this is a DNS issue but I Could have always missed something. Can you get to rarlab.com okay via your browser? |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Yep, via browser was fine.

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
I decided to upload a video of what's happening to youtube, the quality is quite low but just good enough to see. Basically I do this:
Show the IP address (to show it's on virgin) go to youtube.com (which works) go to rarlab.com (which doesnt) Start the vpn Show the IP address (showing a vpn IP address) go to youtube.com (which works) go to rarlab.com (which works) This shows the routing is something virgin's side? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ima7wH1DgE |

Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
all I can say is rarlab.com works here. I use in this order for dns servers.
1 - my own hosted on a dedicated server. 2 - google dns 3 - router, which has VM's dns assigned via dhcp. 1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms home.gateway2 [192.168.1.1] 2 8 ms 8 ms 11 ms cpc14-leic14-2-0-gw.8-1.cable.virginmedia.com [8 2.30.112.1] 3 6 ms 7 ms 6 ms leic-core-1a-ae3-2232.network.virginmedia.net [8 2.3.33.49] 4 37 ms 10 ms 11 ms leed-bb-1a-as8-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.10 5.172.17] 5 17 ms 14 ms 17 ms tcl3-ic-1-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net [212.43. 163.198] 6 15 ms 14 ms 13 ms ldn-b2-link.telia.net [213.248.93.69] 7 12 ms 11 ms 17 ms ldn-bb1-link.telia.net [80.91.250.225] 8 27 ms 26 ms 25 ms hbg-bb1-link.telia.net [80.91.250.220] 9 35 ms 33 ms 35 ms bei-b2-link.telia.net [80.91.254.207] 10 38 ms 38 ms 40 ms dnsnet-ic-134271-bei-b2.c.telia.net [213.248.69. 26] 11 37 ms 34 ms 37 ms 217.70.136.60 12 38 ms 34 ms 45 ms www.rarlab.com [217.70.129.242] |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
So I just got off with virgin who tell me that the reason I cannot get to these sites is probably because my IP address is Blacklisted - but they refuse to change my IP address. They require me to contact all websites that do not load up to enquire why they do this. I also need to contact blizzard to see why they are blocking my IP - this comes from second line support!
I referred them to the posts on wow europe with people having lots of problems but to no avail. They basically said that the onus is on myself to contact the providers to see why this is the case and even though about 25% of sites are not working they are not going forward until I have had proof of response from these providers. Does that sound right? The amount of people on WOW that are having virgin issues: See: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2123515896 http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2123452594 What I find strange is that despite using FOUR machines and 2 iphones that certain webpages will not load - yet will ping and virgin are saying it's up to me to get my IP address unbarred? Any help? |

Hi Masque
Thanks for your reply. Could you have a look at the link I posted on youtube and tell me what you think in regards to this issue I have done a video of it to show what is happening. Thanks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ima7wH1DgE I think my next step might have to be ofcom! |
Re: Serious Virgin Cable Routing Issues
Try Changing your PC/Router's mac address that should assign you a new ip.

Do you have a standalone modem and router if so have you tried changing the MAC address of either your computer if no router is involved or the router itself. The are many sites that can help with doing the above. Here is a link to the OFCOM website http://www.ofcom.org.uk/ |
