Pin Number Required.......WTF

OK, had TiVo in for a couple of days now and must say that 1. The picture is better than my Samsung HD V+ box on SD and HD,but not as sharp as the Sky HD box or as responsive to use.
2. The menu's are quite straight forward to use (I have read the series link posts etc)

But my main complaint (and it's starting to drive all my family mad already) is at random times the box asks for our pin number, and more annoyingly there is no option to turn it off!!!,(ie had to imput it in last night for Coronation Street at 20:30hrs.....WHY)

You can try a reboot of the box:

Quote:

How do I clear or reset my TiVo box?

Want to restart your box, or delete what’s stored?
To see Clear or Reset Set Top Box
Select Help & Settings on the Home screen.
Choose Clear or reset set top box.
Select Restart or Reset System.
Choose from the 4 options.
Restart the set top box

Shuts down your box, then starts it straight back up again. It won’t affect recordings, Series Links, WishList searches or Suggestions

Then you can try and connect to Virgin Media TV service now.

Quote:

Your box regularly connects to our cable network to get updated programme listings, updates and other info. Here you can also see when your box last connected.
To see your network settings:
Select Help & Settings on the Home screen.
Choose Settings enter your PIN.
Select Network.
Choose from the available options.
Connect to the Virgin Media TV service now
Normally, you won’t need to choose this option as your box connects to the network automatically every few hours. But if you choose to connect manually you’ll be able to see the status of the connection. While your box is connecting, you can still watch live TV, set up recordings and search for shows.
Hope this will help?

I was just trying to help? I think that they are looking at the PIN at the moment anyway.

This over from the VM TiVo community forum posted from one of the mods.

We do have plans to make PIN entry and parental control settings more flexible, which we will introduce later this year, but please keep in mind that there are SOME instances where we are indeed required to take PIN before viewing.

The reason for this may be that as the programme finishes at 9pm, Tivo regards it as 'post watershed'.

VM seem to have taken the decision with Tivo to implement additional parental control features over and above the mandatory OFCOM requirements (which relate to premium movies and adult material), and then failed to provide the means to turn them off where not required.

Many regard this as both patronising and insulting to responsible adult customers. There is a thread about this on the Virgin 'Help & Support' forum.

I did not take your post as sarcasm, I know what you mean in regards to some posts on here.

Isn't this the case with the V+ for recordings after 8? Of course, you can actually disable this on the V+ but it looks like they aren't yet allowing this on the TiVo.

Re: Pin Number Required.......WTF

VM's approach to this is totally illogical, and needs to be sorted ASAP.

It is possible to view a show aired after the watershed on IPlayer without any restriction, but the same show recorded on Tivo requires a PIN to watch!

Try 'A303 Highway to the Sun'.

It's not VMs approach, it's the way that TiVo is set up.

Errrr not according to the following (taken from VM TiVo Help and Support forum)

We will improve settings around PIN entry in a future update, but as another poster pointed out there are at least some instances where we are required to enforce PIN entry regardless of household circumstance.

To a point the pin settings are part of TiVo however due to off com there are certain things VM have to have pin protected.

Some PINS are required regardless, while others are TiVo related, so these can be user modified in a future update. Chill

But surely V+ has to follow the same Ofcom rules, and pesumably VM aren't breaking them on the V+?

So, just make tivo behave like V+ for pin protection and everyone will be happy.
