Microsoft to replace Xboxes that don't work with the new disc format?

Apparently the up coming dashboard update that enables the new disc format is not compatible with some older Xboxes, probably related to the type of DVD drive it has inside.

The good news if it is true is Microsoft will replace all affected Xbox consoles with a new 250GB Slim for FREE.

Interesting,,,, I've got a load of old consoles in various states of repair that might just fall into this category.

So next question is, which games use the new disc format.

I have an Elite (bought last year), will they replace that?

They'll only replace it if the servers detect your 360 can't play the discs.

Very, very, very few are being replaced.

Hats of to Microsoft, I doubt they have to replace any, but with the crap that Sony have been suffering this is very good PR.

I wonder how we'll know if our Xboxes are to be replaced, and what about the saves / DLC that I have on them.

Im sure they would email customers and also let them do a Hard Drive Transfer? :)

The new disc format that is part of the beta has been rigorously tested across all Xbox 360 models and there are no known compatibility issues.

Hope that clears a few things up.

Out of curiosity, what about people who don't use Live? I just play single-player on the XBox (can't be bothered to pay, cheapskate that I am :D ), but presumably the update would affect all consoles?

Only if you have your Xbox connected to the internet.

The way I understand it,

You get a message tell you that you Xbox needs replacing (if applicable), you register and they send out a new Xbox slim, you then send you xbox back and get 1 years XBL.

Now that impressive if true. So no Xbox downtime, I guess if you don't return it it would be blocked along with the replacement and have people knocking on your door

I would think it's more along the lines of sending off a repair, where you print off shipping labels to send off your xbox and on receipt they ship the new console to you. Since the email asks you to "start a repair request" ;)
So a week of no xbox (the usual turn around) which is why they're also giving out a 12 month live gold sub (they usually send 1 month subs for warranty repairs/replacements)
