Changed service providers, network problems....
Alright, first off thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I am fairly clueless when it comes to networking, but i managed to set up this network successfully once.
I just switched from quest to comcast. My network consists of the modem, family computer and router upstairs, and a router downstairs which feeds into my personal computer, laptop, and xbox 360. The cable goes from the modem to the upstairs router. the upstairs router feeds into the family computer and a cable runs from the upstairs router to the downstairs router. From the downstairs router it feeds into my laptop, PC and xbox 360. Both my routers are pretty old and mismatched. one is a 3com superstack 2 baseline hub and the other is a dlink 10/100 fast ethernet switch and the modem is a cisco DPC3000. The upstairs comp is running windows 7 and my PC and laptop downstairs are both running XP. Prior to the switch, everything worked great. Now that the new modem is in place, i can get internet on the family computer upstairs and my personal computer downstairs. The 360 and the laptop will not connect to the internet. I have rebooted the modem and routers in succession, which is how i got the internet to work on my PC downstairs. I even tried switching the two routers, but nothing changed. is there something i need to configure in the modem to get this working? Would new matching routers help at all? Thanks again. |

Re: Changed service providers, network problems....
Thanks for the reply, but i actually got it taken care of last night. Spent about an hour talking to a tech guy and he informed me that i needed to get a Comcast recommended router (Linksys or Netgear) and that the modem only supports two wired devices unless you have an approved router, then you can go up to 4 wired and 5 wireless. Everything is working now, so thanks again.
