Virgin cable and netgear wgr614 not playing ball

Hi I am trying to help out my mother in law who has virgin cable broadband. They have the standard dark blue virgin media cable modem and a virgin supplied netgear wgr614. With a cable from the modem to their desktop pc everything works fine. They tried adding the wgr614 and couldn't get it to work and gave up as they did not really need wireless at the time ( this was a few months back).
Today they asked me about it when I was visiting. So what I did was factory reset the router, ensure the modem was on, then plug the router into the modem via the routers wan port and turn the router on. I connected to the wireless network from my iPhone fine but had no Internet. So I logged into the router's admin page (the full blue and White netgear one not the hacked red virgin one) and went to the setup wizard. I asked it to detect settings automatically. It then said "static ip" address detected....but it doesn't seem to have changed the router settings as the basic settings and internet settings have lots of blanks in them. It is missing an Internet address, subnet mask, gateway and Internet login info.
A) why is all this stuff missing?
B) surely they don't really have a static ip as they aren't a business customer?
C) where can I find all the missing into so I can enter it manually? Or is there another way to get the setup yo work?

do this....

Disconnect Power from them all..

Make sure theres an ethernet lead running from the ethernet card in the back of the to the Port 1 on the router and then another ethernet lead running from the port marked internet to the cable modem.

Power on the cable modem first of all and leave it 30 seconds or so until the lights settle down and the modem has locked on and then power up the router and leave that again 30 secs or so.

See if this helps.

I think the only thing i didn't do was power off the modem. Should that make a difference? Will try it when I am next at the inlaws. Ta :-)
