HD Channels Question

VM tout "HD at no extra cost" meaning - I assume - that whatever channels you get in your pack, the HD versions are in there too. (Premium channels excepted of course!)

However, checking the TV Channels List just now I see that that is simply not the case at all, with a lot of the HD variants only availble in the XL pack.

What's going on there then?

Because they mostly market HD in a way that requires XL, kerching!, much like you only get V+ at no extra charge if you have XL. Much like Tivo is only £3 on XL but (I think) will cost £8 if you're not.

XL is still great value but quite restrictive, in my opinion. Currently only 4 of the HD channels are exclusively in the XL pack anyway and that's made up of ESPN, FX, Nat Geo and MTVN but of course that is a pure HD channel.

Good grief Carlos that post almost sounds like you are criticising VM, are you OK!

Re: HD Channels Question

Virgin's HD channel are promoted as "at no extra charge" the majority of the time. Here's how they are included with the different TV packages:
  • TV M: BBC1, BBC HD, ITV1, C4, 5
  • TV M+: add Film 4
  • TV XL: add ESPN, FX, MTV Networks, National Geographic, Sky 1, Sky Living, E4, SyFy, Discovery, Eurosport, Sky Arts 1, Sky Arts 2
And if you are VIP50/100 you get the Sky Premium Sports and Movies HD as part of your package too.

There are a few HD channels available but the HD at no extra cost is mostly applicable on the XL package.

TV M customers of course have to pay the activation charge to get the network HD channels. I don't get them now on TV M even though I originally paid the V+ activation fee as I have now downgraded from XL, I would have to pay £5 each month for V+ to view them. I could always pay to get the V+ swapped if I wanted to but there's no need for me personally as I have Sky.

Sky Premium HD is of course available on VIP but to be clear it's only available at no extra charge on one box but again it's still decent value.
