Optical to phono lead?
I have just had my V+ SA box changed over to the Samsung due to re-booting and pixelation problems. But now I have no surround sound due to the optical connection on the Samsung. So,is there a cheap optical to phono lead I could buy to get my surround sound back.

Thanks gents.Essjay your option seems to fit the bill, but as you said it's a tad expensive. Can anyone come up with a cheaper alternative?

re: Optical to phono lead?
If your amp doesn't have optical in, dump it and get a proper amp.

re: Optical to phono lead?
All you need is a SCART-phono lead such as http://www.maplin.co.uk/scart-to-3-p...t-switch-28102 plugged into the VCR SCART socket on the V+. You can leave the yellow video plug unconnected, or you may be able to find an audio-only version of the cable instead.
You won't be able to use Copy to DVD at the same time, though. |
re: Optical to phono lead?
Can you clarify what input you need.
Masque's link will do that you want if you want to change from optical to coax S/PDIF (which uses a phono connector), Essjay's is for going from S/PDIF to STEREO sound, which will not give you surround sound. If you're using that you may as well just break out the stereo audio from the scart socket and save yourself £35 by getting a scart breakout lead instead. There's literally no need to touch that adapter. |
re: Optical to phono lead?
As you can tell I'm not too technical.Perhaps I can clarify,I have the old pro logic system which was connected from my amp to the SA V+ box using a phono lead with left and right jacks. So I want to somehow connect this phono lead to the optical socket of the Samsung box.Or if there is another/easier way, please explain.

re: Optical to phono lead?
Does it not have any other inputs? As you won't actually be getting true surround sound with that setup, just emulated surround sound from the stereo input.
If that's the only option, then something like spiderplant's link (Although you can find the lead much cheaper) is your best bet to take the stereo sound from the scart socket. It's pointless buying an adapter to convert the optical output to stereo because you'll end up paying way more for the adapter than you could get a scart lead for. One of these on the VCR scart and then your existing phono jacks will work fine. Just make sure if you do go the scart route you want an OUT and not an IN, or you want it to be switchable. |
re: Optical to phono lead?
Thanks very much TheDon.I may well go with your option,I have enough wires and cables at the back of my amp,dvd player and V+ box, this seems a tad tidier.
