Ivory Coast - is this hypocrisy?

There is unrest in the Ivory Coast. Apparently the guy who has been in charge lost a recent election, but doesn't want to let go of power.

This is causing "unrest". So far, 500 people have been killed and a million made homeless.

My question is: where is the UN resolution? There are UN troops in place, but where are the tomahawk missiles?

Is this hypocrisy? Or is it government policy to leave countries alone if their biggest export is cocoa beans?

Of course it is.You can't power industry with cocoa beans.

You could if more women were in power.

Only if we're limiting discussion to trite and superficial comparisons of entirely different situations.

It would be good to see a "unifying statement", something along the lines of "We will launch missiles on a sovereign nation if..."

Do you have one? If so, please share it with us.

I don't have one. Do you?

couple of reasons I think Europe hasnt got involved in this....
1st of all the distance is too great.
2nd African Union troops are already there so this would be something they should be able to handle.
3rd why get involved in that mess if there isnt anything for us to get out of (only good Cocoa deals?)

4th, unlike Libya both sides in the dispute are well armed and well organised, although the side with the international backing is more well armed and more well organised than the other ... in short, the UN has expressed a view on the situation, but it is clear that Security Council involvement is not required in order to bring it about.

It doesn't matter if I have one or not. It does matter that the government doesn't seem to have one. The phrase "making it up as they go along" seems appropriate.

So the tomahawk missiles shouldn't be used unless (or until) one side has an unfair advantage over the other?

I think the whole thing is rather more complex than that - but then I suspect your willingness to pass off an entire military operation as 'the tomahawk missiles' suggests you're not particularly interested in engaging with the muddy reality of international politics.

If a politician said that I would get worried.

In a democracy our elected representatives have a responsibility to explain their actions to the electorate. The problem may indeed be complex, but that doesn't mean that no attempt should be made at an explanation.

It wasn't so long ago that a Prime Minister lied to the public. If we had insisted on being told the truth in plain and simple terms, we might not have sent troops to Iraq.

Perhaps the "muddy reality of international politics" is that governments keep the truth from those to whom they are responsible.

EDIT: The death toll is rising.
