I've got a belkin's N router and was wondering whether I could use my modem mac in the router itself instead of its own?

You can not use the modem MAC in the router as the router MAC is on the WAN side so you'll be attempting to get two pieces of equipment with the same MAC trying to talk to each other.. This will instantly fail...
