VM going green by going grey

I don't have a story to link to, I just know.

Thousands of green cabinets around the country are all going to be painted grey, as this will help keep them cool and prevent loads of faults caused by overheating.

It doesn't apply to the different coloured cabs in conservation zones etc.

Correct, they will only be painted grey once they have been through the cabinet cleanup process (or new cabinets). Great idea, its amazing how something as simple as changing the colour of the cabinet can reduce its carbon footprint (retains less heat so equipment doesn't have to work as hard, lowering power consumption).

Simple physics.

Grey (lighter colours)

absorps less infra-red heat than darker colours

i.e dark green.

Yep I get that, I just envisaged a dark grey cab like some of the BT ones and thought, Yeah that's gonna work,,,,

But the light grey ones aren't that far off white, if you squint your eyes a bit.

So why not white while they are about it?:erm:

Probably because they'll be light grey once they get a bit dirty anyway.

Because you don't want them to be an affront on the senses.

Brilliant white will stand out a mile, and would probably be incongruous to most of the surroundings.

Whereas grey (and green before it) eventually blends into the backgound.

We live in very grey world.

White ideal for graffiti so not best colour to choose.

Doesn't matter what colour a cabinet is, it will get vandalised anyway! Just means the perpetrators have to change to darker hues of spray can
