Xboxes appear to play most formats from what I have heard.

However they will definately play avi.

Provided your DVD is decrypted you can convert it to good quality avi using Auto GK which is free software.

I'm a cheapskate and so use free software! I have a WD TV Live streamer and rip to an ISO file using DVDShrink. I use the 're-author' function to just take the main movie.

After that, I use some software called Handbrake which will compress to an MPEG-4 format to take a movie down to 1.4GB.

Ripping only takes 15 minutes, compressing takes about an hour but I can queue all my ISO files and leave it running overnight with an automatic shutdown

Why not play the DVD in the xbox?

It will be far better quality

Got a Vista 64 system with an Intel E8400 and 4 gigs of RAM. Both cores were going full speed. I was decrypting discs at the same time as re-endoding so that probably doesn't help!!

That makes sense since the E8400 isn't exactly a slow CPU. Thinking about it, the time taken also depends on the size and format you are converting to. I was basing my times on a 600mb - 800mb Xvid.
