bandwidth monitor tool

ello,

does anybody know of any good free bandwidth monitoring tools??? its for a mate of mine who has 3 computers and a xbox 360 on his network and only a 40gb download allowance from his ISP so would like to know whats happening on his network before the nasty bill arrives for high usage.

Cheers :)

prob not from the consoles, I don't know what tool would do comps & consoles tool, maybe you can get something at the router end (after all traffic has to pass through that as one point of source)

You would need to run something on your router to monitor all devices on your network.

To figure out what can be done on his router, we need to know what router he has.

Just out of interest, the superhub (netgear based) is there a tool or app for that?, it would seem easier and simpler to monitor at the point of source, rather than on all connected devices seperately and hoping for accurate results.

Have a look at http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ it can monitor specific network connections or all of them.

I'm a bit thick so bear with me here.

I have a modem attached to a router (or a combined modem/router) from that will be various wired/wireless devices all accessing the internet to do their thing.

How will anything installed on any one device, know what all the other devices are doing, unless its an application that the router itself is running?

Sure anything installed on my PC will know what I'm doing, but how will it know what daughters laptop is doing on the wireless, or sons ethernet connection in the next room, when its not going through my PC but through the router.

But only on one individual computer. It doesn't monitor all your other devices.

Thats good to know i'm not completely potty then.

So Superhub then, is there anything available for that to tally up everyones internet usage?

Re: bandwidth monitor tool

For the Superhub though it either has to be built-in (supplied by VM) or none at all. I don't know if the feature's built in as I don't have one.

Mind you since VM don't have any concrete monthly usage limits, why exactly do you need one?

Re: bandwidth monitor tool

always good to know how much usage youre getting, agreed unlike most ADSL offerings, where you'd run out of quota about 5 days before the end of the month grrr.
